Finally almost ready for a trip I've longed for, for a very long time.
Magruder Corridor, part of the old Nez Perce Indian Trail from Elk City Idaho to Darby Montana. It is mostly a 4X4 trail but I'm going to give it a try. I've been fascinated by this story, also known as the Magruder Murders, since I was a kid.
Long story short, a man named Magruder was en route over this trail bringing his gold from Montana to Lewiston Idaho in the 1860's. A group of men he hired to help him pack everything out murdered him and his party along the trail. All the bodies/equipment were thrown to the bottom of a ravine and the mules set free.
The culprits came into Lewiston riding Magruders horses and the mules were tagging along as they had nowhere else to go. They sold the horses at a local ranch and jumped on a stage west bound.
Well, Magruder had a friend in Lewiston that was about as good a friend as anyone could ask for. His name was Hill Beachy, owned the Lewiston Hotel, and was concerned about his friend as he was late arriving to Lewiston.
Beachy found out about the horses the next day, confirmed they were Magruder's and lit out after the stage on horse back. He tracked those men clear to San Francisco, made a citizen's arrest and brought them back to Lewiston where they were tried and convicted for the Magruder party murder. They were hung on a hillside in Lewiston where a park now stands on 13th ST. The park name is Hill Beachy.
Sorry for the long post but like I said, this story fascinates me. I HAVE to go there. Know what I mean?
I will do my best at picture taking and gathering further info for anyone that may be interested.

DJ,
You da man. I wish I were going with you. Should be a good trip. Yes, post up some pics of your escapades. If it's a 4WD trail, leave all non-essential stuff at home to lighten the load.

We did that trail starting from the Montana side in July, 2001 in our '68 Landcruiser. Beautiful country! I don't think we ever had to put it in 4 wheel drive as the road was in pretty good shape. Mostly a lot of small downed trees across the road and some rocks to negotiate. I can't remember if there were any low branch issues. Probably not, since the fire fighters had to get in there during the '88 fire. On the way out on the Idaho side, we met a TC going the other way. He didn't seem to be having any trouble.
