We have decided that the Black Hills is where we want to spend our summers. Some very nice parks and some not so nice but with the Motorcycle Rally and other events in the Hills most CG are pricy. We spent 3 days interviewing at differn't parks and have narrowed it down to 2. Full HU, free laundry, free propane, free wi-fi and cable. Discount at the country store plus VIP passes to major attractions. Requirement is 30 hrs a week. 15 hrs each or one person can work all 30. $7.50 for all hours worked over 30. Rates at the park can run up to $41 a night with higher prices during the Sturgis Rally. Work would include asstorted cleaning jobs, mowing ect. All of which I am capable of doing. Question: From what many of you have signed on to does this sound like a reasonable offer?

You are going to receive answers all over the board on this one My take is that if it is what you want to do and where you want to be...so be it.

I, personally, think it is too much. Our current position is 11 hours total for the site and all perks, $8.00 an hour over that. Do what you are comfortable with.

Some will flame you for taking the position, if you do. Don't let them get to you........

You do what you think is right.
At the present time we have free site and paid all hours worked. We also worked one day for site and three days for pay. Also we worked 1/2 for site and 1/2 for pay. It depends on you and where you want to be and do.
We spent about ten days in the Rapid City / Sturgis area and love everything.

15 hours each is to high. I'd see if they would work with you to come down to 10 hours each. Otherwise I'd pass.

The hours worked before you get paid does seem a little high. What is the monthly rate of the sites? If you have that number, is it roughly the 30 hours/week times $7.50 times 4 weeks? That's $900 a month for the spot. That would be really expensive in that area.

You figure wifi is about $20 a month, cable is about $20 a month (I don't know, we don't have it), laundry $20 a month (if you get really dirty!) and propane is $3 or so a gallon, so I'd say we go through about 40 gallons every 6 months (that would be heavy usage) so maybe another $20 a month. Add that up and your looking at $80 a month "free" stuff, which puts the price down to about $820. Is that what the rate of the monthly site is? Then you know.

Doing a little math is usually the way to go to see how good or bad they "help" the workcampers. But after all is said and done, your feeling on the place is also important - do you get the warm fuzzy when you are talking to the owners? Have you looked the campground up on RV reviews or RV.net campgrounds? Do your research about them as they are going to do research on you. We will all congratulate you in the end, as it is ultimately your decision.

Good Luck

I did do the math and if you figure nightly rate for 50A FHU at $44.oo X 365 days divided by 12 months you get $1338 a month(30A is $39.00). The nightly prices are higher during 4th of July and 10 day Sturgis Rally. 30 hours X $7.50 = $225.00 X 52 divided by 12 = $975.00. Plus the $80 to a $100 worth of freebies thrown in. High end $1438 for $975.....Grated most of us don't usually pay this much for a monthly rate but in the Black Hills many CG do not offer monthly rates. This is for the 2009 season so have time to do more checking. I have also signed up for the workamper news so will see what else is offered.

Depends on if it's a job or an adventure. If it's a job you're wanting then you can probably beat minimum wage. If it's an adventure then go have fun.

It does seem like a lot for the site. It probably depends upon what the market is in that area. Since this is what the park asks, they must believe that they can fill the positions. Have you talked with any other parks in that area to see what they pay and the hours asked for a site? You may want to check out the hours that are asked for by Custer State Park of their volunteers since they also get an RV site.

For myself, I would not be willing to clean toilets and showers 30 hours a week for an RV site.

I have to agree with all the other posters. First, if it's acceptable to you, then go ahead. For me, the maximum I'll work for a private cg before being paid is 20 hours/week - and that's pushing it and more than I've ever had to give.

And you are comparing the nightly rate - which is always less than a cg will charge for a weekly and/or monthly or seasonal. If you're going to be there for a season to work, chances are they'll give an even better rate than the monthly. Those are the figures to look at.
