My CTD is turned up quite a bit and I run a manual trans, and that was pulling a 12K 5er.
BS! There is no way on God's green earth that anyone is getting 14-16mpg pulling 12K. Ain't gonna happen!
OK maybe if you never exceed 50mph and you take 3 miles to attain that speed from a dead stop and every thing is done on flat ground with no wind.

Whatever dude, think what you want. Have fun with your "quiet" light-duty Isuzu diesel. I also get a consistant 21 mpg when empty (when I dont hotrod it)!

We are going on vacation in September and will be doing almost 3,600 miles with the MoHo. When we get back we'll see if my dealer is right and will check out our options then, We'll see, we dont dislike the MH, in fact we really like it. We are just thinkin that we would use a 5er more since the TOTAL cost involved will allow us to use the 5er more budget days than the MH.
We switched to a 5'er in October, after a long string of Class A's. We do like the 5'er better, but there are always trade-offs. We liked the outside storage better on the A, even if there is more of it on the 5'er. Inside storage has a ton more. Living area is wonderful, and the floor plan we have is much more to our liking and the way we live. The 5'er and the MH are the same length, but the difference inside is pretty dramatic.
As to fuel mileage, we were averaging 6 to 7 MPG with the 460 in the A, and depending on the trip, we average 13 or better with the 2001 7.3 PSD. THe truck is high mileage, so is well broke -in. We pull a Heartland Big Horn 3370 that weighs 12231 loaded. I don't know if the newer trucks get that kind of gas mileage. We usually get between 10-11 with hills, and have gotten over 14 pulling I-5. Best we have gotten is 21 MPG empty, 200 mile trip, all I-5 with the cruise set at 68. Keep in mind, we usually pull right around 60-63 MPH, and don't believe we need to pull uphill at top speed. We have other hot rods to drive at home when we feel the need for speed. The truck is not chipped, but has full gauges that we really watch when pulling.
Insurance was almost a wash, but not having the extra drive train to worry about has been a plus for us. The payments are lower as well. When we got the trailer, the gas prices hadn't started to climb and we figured we could go twice as much or twice as far with the fuel savings. Now it's more like a third, but we're still happy with the change. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I know what your sayin, our Dodge is a 97 with 151K on the CTD. Its a 12 valve and its NOT a computer controlled engine, all my mods are mechanical and we've had it forever. Its got new tires and we just rebuilt the front end, and put in a brand new NV5500 trans and a ceramic clutch kit. Its a pullin beast, our HR Alumascape grossed out at 11,870, the Dodge had no problems with it.

The mileage figure is pretty right-on (unless lots of hills) for
a first gen Cummins with row your own and the load indicated.
The 2nd gen did pretty good too, the 3rd gen is about what the D/M & Ferd guys are saying for their trucks.
After '07 all of the brands lost some mpg due to the emissions & DPFs.

I have noticed that I've lost a little "pull" with the new lower sulfur diesel fuel, but not much. I've done some towing mods for mine 350 plates, garret torque turbo, 4" stainless exhaust, FIPK. For a 11 year old truck it flat gets-it. I'll run with any of the 3rd gen trucks.
