Hello. We are preparing to go from Yellowstone to Mount Rushmore in September. Going to take the atv's with us in the toyhauler. Does anyone know if there are some good campgrounds along the way to stay where you can ride the quads out of? Thanks for your help. Alan

Check out Wild Billslink I have not been there, but have heard good things. SD is supposed to have tons of trails around the Black Hills from old mining and RR tracks. Give us a report when you get back, it's on my list of places.

The Coverd Wagon in Piedmont (about 15 miles north of Rapid City)has some great trails that you can ride on right out of camp. The owner is an atv owner and can direct you to the trails. If you would be able to make it there by Aug 29- 31 the Black Hills UTV rally will be going on. It is for UTV's, ATV's and dirt bikes. For information check out www.blackhillsutvrally.com

We have stayed at Custers Gulch in Custer. It has a pretty setting and is about 15 miles from Rushmore. You can ride right out of park. Not a whole lot of area around there to ride but is pretty cool and pleasant. Rapid City area is like being back in Texas. Outside west Yellowstone we have stayed around Island Park Idaho. Several RV parks between W Yellowstone and Island Park. Puts you a little way from park though. If you are going to do the park much you might want to stay inside park for few days and just enjoy park. Little hard to stay outside park and drive back and forth. Not to mention how expensive it is to drive back and forth out of park.

We stayed at Wild Bills last summer - it was fun, but the riding was more forest road type rather than trails - my boys were a little bored. The pool was small but clean and you could ride out of the campground.

Be careful, if your route takes you through Lead and up and over Strawberry Hill - that grade is a MONSTER!!!!!!!!!!! I was pretty worried about my pick up.

We went to Mount Rushmore twice - during the day the first time and then we came back for the sunset ceremony - fantastic!

Children are unpredictable. You never know how high up the wall they're going to drive you
