Lots of cold-blooded critters are affected by temperatures; remember the old system of counting cricket chirps to estimate the temperature? If your summer started early and/or has been warmer than usual, then they are gong to be growing and maturing ahead of schedule. Or, weather or other local conditions might have affected their predators, so their population is bigger than most years, making you more aware of them.
they sure have been good for the new toad crop. I've noticed now that we have had a few 2-3" rain falls the last couple of weeks they have all but disapered in my area.
