Help.....I am new to forum so helli. I have a 1989 Ford Class C, runs great but now after I drive it for a while, gets up to temp (190-200) I will not start until cooled off. Just goes "click". Battery is about 2 montyhs old. The emergency switch doesn't even start the thing??? Any advice would be GREAT

Your starter is gettting ready to say bye bye to you. Better think about replacing it or getting used to waiting for it cool off before you can get going again. JMHO Bill

I'm with him, but don't just let it cool to start because soon enough it won't even then.

90% chance it's the starter motor failing. The clicking is the relay activating.

What about the starter relay located under the hood??

Sometimes a bad ground wire or connection will do the same thing.

Look, you starter is tell you it is dieing. It has given you fair notice. Next time it fails take a volt meter and check it out. In a van it's a pretty hot place with little or no air motion under there. Things get real hot, and you pulling a load every time you move. If I were you, I would carry a starter with me. But you will get a better price if you turn in the old one when you pick up the new (core charge). JMHO Bill again.

I once had an older Porsche 911 that had the same problem. Was told by an expert that the starter was too close to the exhaust and would overheat. Their solution was to put a second battery in the car to overcome the problem.

That said - I agree with the previous posts. You should check all of your connections and your starter. That starter is almost 20 years old, it may be tired.

Thanks for all the responses, I will take out the starter and bring it to autozone for replacement........and probably the relay also, just in case

While replacing the starter, look into adding a HEAT SHIELD for the starter. This will help prevent HEAT SOAK issues with a starter acting like your is doing.
