I have experience with changing my locals. 7 years of experience.

When I'm out of the Pittsburgh area I call DTV and have my SERVICE address changed to my new location. They want a physical address. If I have no physical address I just look up an address near me and give them that address. My BILLING address remains my home Pittsburgh address. Once when in Tampa I called and had the Jacksonville locals turned on so I could watch the Steelers. Jacksonville and Tampa's spot beam overlap.

I have NEVER paid a fee for changing my service address.

Thanks for everyone's comments and help. From a satellite dish forum I obtained some other information that might be helpful to anyone considering this approach.

Not all locals are broadcast from the 101 satellite. Some are on the 119 and 72.5 satellites. These locals would, in effect, require either a multi-satellite dish (for 101 and 119 sats) or a completely separate dish (for 72.5 sat). Since there is some local spotbeam overlap, it might be necessary to pick an appropriate service address that is receivable and only requires the one dish for the 101 satellite.

The second issue appears to be obtaining the right help from DirecTV Customer Support. There is no doubt that some support folks know exactly what is needed and able to make the needed changes within the span of the phone call. Other support folks either are less informed or less inclined to go to the trouble to make the changes.

The ideal situation would be for DirecTV to realize that they could make a lot of RV folks happy and increase their market share by meeting this need. The costs would be minimal and should comply with FCC requirements without the need for additional forms and afidavids. Since the locations of the various local markets are controlled by spot beams and you can only receive one set of locals at a time, why not try to meet the customer's needs?
