My GM card gives 5% on all purchases good toward new cars I have gotten $11,000 refund so far
Shell has 5% on gas only at Shell Stations 1% on diesel.

The 5% rebates on real Credit Cards (not the company like Shell CC) are promotional rebates. They last short time, but than usually stay at about 1% cashback level. Discover is doing that for decades, lately AE joined the club. Point is that they don't list the detail on the statements, just give you total adjustment amount, so how do you really know?
Who is reading the fine print with promotion expiration data?

My Citi card gives 3% on gas, fuel and pharmacy purchases. 2% on everything else. Our just completed vacation, actually ran into 2 RV Parks that were check or cash only. They were in the middle of Idaho, and near nothing except a river. One of the parks was busy (actually, full 2 of the 3 nights), the other wasn't (less than 1/2).

I can have two airline tickets to anywhere anytime I want them, and that is a lot more than a 5% return, as well as a number of other incentives and services. Membership has its rewards. They ain't all monetary.

The credit card fees are already added into the purchase price of anything you buy whether you use a credit card or not. If everybody went back to cash, prices would most definitely come down or at least stabilize. But that would mean businesses would have to switch to a cash or check policy and take a chance customers would be agreeable. I know a really good restaurant that does not accept credit cards, never did and does a great business.

I got one of them. I have the old, original type. Credits me up to 5% on ALL purchases for a max of $500/year based on anniversary date. So far, saved $7,600 on new vehicles. Pay every thing on this card. Gotta pay it off every month or the interest rate gets you.

Shhhhhhh, PLEASE don't tell my CC company since I have had the card for over 6 years so far and the 5% is on any gas from any station.

I have a Visa sponsored by Colonial Mortgage that give back 2% of "ALL" purchases as a credit toward your mortgage with them if you have one. Otherwise it is 1% cash back. All these type cards are good if you use them. However, as stated earlier, no one can give 5% cash back as this is more than they charge the merchant. I do not waste my time with "Introductive" discounts for a short period of time. More trouble than it is worth.
