Hubby and I live in the Pacific Northwest. Our daughter and her family live on the East Coast. They have rented a house for the first week in Sept. on NC's Outer Banks. We are invited to join them. Our son mentioned that this is hurricane season (he is a weather freak).

We will have a car but have no idea what to do in the event of a hurricane. Can anyone with knowledge give us some advice? We would love to see the area and play with the grandchildren, but don't want to have to handle some storm completely unprepared. Thanks in advance.

You will have plent of warning and if needbe just pack up and leave. We face that all the time here on the Gulf Coast.

Keep your gas tank full and leave early if there is a hurricane headed your way. Go inland for a couple of hundred miles and lay up. In any case go the opposite direction that the hurricane is headed.

We lived in FLAUSA for years and have learned that if if lived your life by the hurricane season you wouldn't be able to do anything. Plan your trip and go. If along the way you find a storm heading for the OB then you go with a Plan B. Back in the mid 80's I had my kids camping on the beach at Galveston Island SP. Hurricane Danny chased us all the way thru Arkansas and we wound up camping at Sam Baker SP in MO for the rest of our trip.

Just use common sense -- check the news/weather before you go and during your trip to make sure nothing's brewing. The good thing about hurricanes is you have plenty of advance warning!

FWIW, we have reservations in Myrtle Beach in that same time range. While we know a hurricane could disrupt our plans (it's happened before), it obviously doesn't keep us from planning a trip that time of the year.

I rely on this site for up to date, practically up to the second, reports and satellite views. I can watch a storm when it approaches.
Also clicking on the top where it says Tropical/hurricane and then read the posts by Dr Jeff Masters ,you can read a very accurate description of what is going on and what to expect.
I swear by his predictions.

try it out.

Lived in hurricane target areas my entire life. As others said, don't worry about it too much.

Just keep an eye on the evening news and if a hurricane is brewing, you will have lots of time to make a decision to leave or stay.

Generally, if you wanted two pieces of advice when a hurricane is approaching....(1) keep the gas tank full (2) have cash on hand, because if the power goes out, every store or gas station will be "cash only."

I've lived through 4 direct hits. My family has lived through others -- don't cancel plans, as someone above said.

Enjoy your trip!

That is a good site that lwmuddy recommended, I watch it everytime a hurricane is headed our way. Pretty accurate.

There is a very slim chance a hurricane will hit the outer banks while you are there, however...

If a hurricane is heading for the outer banks, LEAVE! Get out of there. You need to be at least 100 miles inland if a hurricane is entering your area.

Don't worry, but be alert to all weather forecasts.

You will be fine, just go. We rent a house down the Jersey shore every summer for our entire family (22 of us,) and we have gone in early September and now we're into August. Hurricane season is from June 1 - October 31. As others have said, if you are told to leave - leave right away. There aren't many big roads off the Outer Banks and the bridges can really back up.
We went to Grand Cayman last summer to visit our daughter and her family and had to be evacuated within 3 days of getting there because of Hurricane Dean. That was interesting
You will love the time with your family, trust me.
