Has been talk about people will go to smaller RVs because of the gas prices.
Does anyone have any idea what you can save by downsizing?
I expect if you go from a 45 foot A class to a 24 foot C Class you should have better mileage but how much?

This could be an interesting thread. Depending on engines and transmissions, you may not get much better fuel mileage by "downsizing".
I really haven't seen all that many diesel engine Class C campers, most seem to be gas engines.

We had a 36 foot DP MH....got 7 miles to the gallon while towing our pickup.
We bought a used 5th wheel (21 foot), tow it behind that same pickup and get 12-13 mpg.......not really that much of a savings.....BUT, we no longer have the high payment on the MH.

Just a guess, but chasing mileage could very well not really be cost effective. Could cost thousands to gain 4 to 5 mpg maybe. The folks I've met with large 500 plus horsepower MH's are enjoying themselves and not whining about the price of fuel

The money you save by downsizing (not much)
The money you lose by selling your present rig in today's market (lots)
Savings overall??

When gas prices started to raise.
I 'briefly' thought about the doing the same, buy a 5th wheel and truck. That is until I saw the $60,000 sticker on a new truck, and add to that the price of the 5th wheel.
I can stick a lot of gas into my MH for $60,000!!
Bought a fuel economy lil toad to stick on the back end instead and will continue to RV.

My 2007 GS 6211 Class C was just under 23 feet, and the BEST tank of gas that I ever got was about 11 MPG. I kept records for every fillup I made in the two years that I owned it and my overall mileage for nearly 10,000 miles was around 9.5 MPG. This included allowing 1/2 gallon per hour for generator operation.
I never did any tests of a full tank of gas, but I do know that keeping the speed down was the best way to improve my mileage.

I got my best ironically while running the A/C and pulling a full load heading south towards Roseburg, got 10.1 mpg with the old 360 gasser. Got Upper 8s and 9s the rest of the trip. Had a few problems with the engine getting a bit on the hot side, but we were pushing 90+ degree temps and the wind was blowing broadside which didn't help the radiator get air.
I do plan to upgrade here pretty soon to the biggest one I can find to help mitigate this in the future, the original rad's got 140k+ miles on it.

OK! just under 24ft E350 Triton V10. Trip was 3100 miles and a bit. Speed, average 55mph. Filled tank before leaving and again on return to same gas station. For the trip the average was 13.4169 mpg
Now it looks good, sounds great and if that's your only consideration, go for it. If you like the convenience and space in a larger motor home then keep what you have, mpg isn't everything.
However, in a small 24 footer, quarters are tight, storage is sparse. The living area has to convert to a bedroom at night. Nothing at all like the comforts of even a small class A or a larger class C.
We were trying to get a class B van, specifically a Pleasure Way on a Ford chassis (another story) but settled for this one. Although I wasn't happy at first it proved to be the better choice for us, and we're quite happy with it.

Not an expert here, but as far as towing, it appears that any combination gets the same, 10-12 mpg. for a standard fifth wheel or travel trailer.
