It's a fair deal at $19,000, but there is no market right now for those trucks (at least where i live) Auction price would be closer to $13,000 so anything over that is their profit. You are in control when buying a truck right now, some dealers around here won't even take them on trade as they can't get rid of them.
Auction price would be nowhere near $13,000. Searching Manheim auctions across the country, identical-equipped and similar mileage vehicles are bringing, on average, wholesale of $17,200 in average condition. This is a figure based on actual auction sales from 7/1 - 7/28/08, and not just a pie-in-the-sky guess.
Actually it was no guess, but I did screw up by not hitting "diesel" when running the numbers. I still show $17,000 +- a couple hundred for trade-in value in good condition. I'm surprised auction would be so close to trade-in except that there are a lot more trucks going to auction in my area.

what they gave for this truck on trade ($28,900) and the most I think I should offer would be 18K
Since they bought a new truck that's what they "gave" him on trade. They can play the numbers when doing a trade-in on a new one. Instead of dropping the price on the new truck, they give more in trade and then show you how much of a high amount they "gave" the previous owner and they are already at their bottom dollar. I would guess they got 14-16k for trade in.

Lot's of good info. here but forget about the trade-in price. I have dealt with many dealers and when pricing out what they will give me, they always try to use "loan value" when giving me a price for mine. I suspect that is what they offered the previous owner.
I always start with lot's of research and determine what I consider a fair price. Their choice to accept. If not, I walk.
As other's said, they play the numbers so be careful. Turning hawk has some good suggestions.
No, nobody has to 'defend or quantify' their offer, but a dealer that's been in the business for the number of years I have will put a lot more thought into accepting an offer that's been well thought-out and justified by the potential purchaser than one that's just pulled out of thin air. Show the dealer you're serious, have done your research, are ready to buy, and can purchase a comparable truck in your trade area for what you're offering. If you do this, he's much more likely to accept your offer without even countering. I know how it works........
turninghawk,
I do appreciate the advice. I have spent many hours on the net
and at local dealers looking at their inventory and pricing. I have
a stack of paper that I have printed out that I think I can be a
knowledgeable buyer. I do not want to rip the dealer off.. but I
also have no problem negotiating the best deal for my money. I know
he has to make a profit and from my past dealings they make a profit
on both ends.. from my research $17,500 would be the max I will go.
If they take it great.. if not.. I am off to the Dodge boys... they
have a nice 05 dually... a little more with the same miles again with
knowledge as my friend.

Sounds like you're ready to go. Best of luck to you, and whichever one you end up with, enjoy it!
