My wife was never out west past Nashville Tn. We took 2 west trips in 1989 and 99. Had a blast!!! An old man working at a welcome center in colorado was talking to us. He said it was nice to see yuonger people on vacation. He said him and his wife waited to long to travel. They took a few trips together and then she died. He said it was not fun anymore without her. His advice was to travel while you can, no matter what. I took his advice. Now my wifes health is to bad to take long trips. We stay closer to home and the wife says she is glad we took the west trips when we did. It would never happen now.
Are you going to be miserable, sitting at home wishing you would have gone anyway?!!

This is often times the case more often than not. Today, when someone says; "they can afford it, but dont," you are left to wonder why they are not spending, unless of course they really can't afford it.

Life is short, shorter than anyone knows. Travel while you can, money should be no object, since it's only "money anyway," tomorrow is not guaranteed. Live, and live BIG! That's our plan!

Yep I agree with you FJ. IMHO crazy, stupid and cheap. How much longer do you think you will be able to do this ride before age catches up with you?
As for the principle part I get that but it is what it is.

20 years from now, yep could have gone done and seen, but that gas was so high etc..............JMHO

Dang you guys are good, somewhere I doubled the gallons I thought I needed. (too much on my mind I guess)

so lets see.... 2500 miles one way, round trip is 5000 miles per bike.
Two bikes would be a total of 10,000 miles. So at 40 mpg both bikes would take a total 250 gallons at $5 a gallon is only $1250 bucks. For some reason I was thinking $2500 in gas. So I'm only looking at about $500 more that it would have cost last year with gas being about $2 a gallon higher this year.

I think most of you are right, take the trip and forget the extra cost.

It appears that the general consensus is GO I agree. I'm not about to let fuel prices slow us down much, and the wife agrees.

Now you're talking! What's a few thousand dollars, anyway? Especially when you're likely earning a tidy annual sum....you only live once, and this ain't the practice round! ...I'd buy a new bike, or put one on-order this year, as you suggested too! They probably have some attractive pricing on some models, who knows!

Make those hotel/motel reservations! Good riding, and good luck on the Homecoming trip to Milwaukee!

According to Google, it's only 2065 miles one way from Portland to Milwaukee. But you said you may take the scenic route.

I was planning a long RV trip this summer but I canceled it. Partially because of diesel prices but mostly because I decided to take a trip in the T-Bird instead. The lease is up on it in a few months and we are about 5,000 miles low on the allocated miles. I figure since I'm paying for those miles whether I use them or not we may as well try and use them. So in a couple of weeks we'll be heading all the way up the coast from central California to the Canadian border and then will come inland and figure some nice route to return on. I haven't even tried to figure the gas cost yet but I am planning on lots of sun screen as the top will be down for most of the trip.
