Hi,

We got some bad water somehow from our local state park in Michigan – Sterling State - very foul smelling when we turn the sink on. I’m pretty sure that she did not fill it with the gray water hose, I think it’s just pretty stinky well water or something. I think it smells like Sulfur. Anyway a friend of mine said that there was a way to mix bleach with vinegar or something like that to clean out the freshwater tank and cut the smell - is this correct? If so, anyone know of the correct recipe? Or should we go to the local rv store and buy some kind of tank cleaner instead?

The RV is a Four Winds Five Thousand, 2003.

Add a cup of bleach to your fill hose and connect to fresh water spigot to fill your tank. This should clean out your hose and your holding tank. Be sure to run some of the bleach/water mixture through your faucets to clean out any water that got in to the water system in your coach. I routinely do this about 2-3 times a year whether I got in to some bad water or not.

Hot water heaters give off a sulfur smell with use. Flush hw tank several times and sanitize (1/4 cup bleach per 15 gals of fresh water). Reflush a couple of times to rid the clorine smell.

Add some bleach to holding tank, run thru the lines hot and cold, let sit overnight. The drain an flush. It will take quite a bit of flushing to get rid of the bleach smell.

One trick whenever I clean my tanks when I add the concoction I then drive around for a few miles and let it slosh around for a good scrubbing, then I drain and flush.

Use the bleach first(sanitize) flush & drain(sometimes more than once). Then some white vinegar into fresh water tank to get rid of bleach taste. Run it thru the pipes - let it rest - then flush 'er out. A little residual vinegar o.k.- like a little lemon in your drinking water.
