I have a friend that was doing exactly that. I don't know the TH model, but it was a relatively lightweight one. It wasn't long before he upgraded the truck - I don't think he made it one season.
I am NOT the weight police - but realistically your fuel mileage will suck and with a HTT your biggest worry has to be your tranny. Especially if you lug the engine regularly on hills.
Travelling with the wife and two kids (12 and 10)...

I sound like Mangler's friend. Got a WW FK1900 to two behind my Chevy 1500. Pretty close to the limit of that truck. Flat terrain was OK, as long as the wind wasn't blowing too much. Throw in some wind, and it really started to suck the gas. 10 mpg in still conditions, and down to 7 mpg range with the wind. Throw in some hills, and 65 mph was tough.
Exit half ton, enter 3/4 ton. Mileage actually went up, into the 12 to 13 mpg range.

If you're towing more than 10K, you might consider a TV bigger than a 1\2 ton.
Lots of + responses in this thread but I also tow a hauler with a half ton and I know I'm pushing my limits. I tow about 5500 lbs loaded (scale weights) with a Dodge with 360. I went from 3.55 to 4.10 gears. I'd recommend 3.73 or 3.90 but that's another point.
First, what is the gear ratio, tire height, gcwr and gvwr of the vehicle? That will help get a response that is based on real ratings for your vehicle. Every "half ton" is different. My 99 "half ton" is way different than some of the current half tons which have much higher ratings, more like 3/4.
Pulling my WW FB1900 with a 2007 Tundra, and I feel it is nicely matched to the job. A lot depends on the options on the "1/2 ton" truck, too. The range of engines and drivetrain options offered on trucks makes one "1/2 ton" truck a lot different than another as far as how comfortably it tows a given load.
Thanks to everyone for the input. My truck is a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Quad Cab 4wd 5.3L V8 and 17" wheels. It has 3.42 axle ratio and is rated for 7400lb max trailer weight and 13000 GCWR. I use a weight distrubtion hitch so I figure I can go about 1000 lbs on the tounge weight.
