If reloading the driver doesn't work, it's anybody's guess.

Sometimes you can go into the Volume control panel and look at advanced properties. While the main volume will be 100% the wave volume will be muted or way down. This is the actual source of digital sound produced by the PC (as opposed to MIC or CD).

You might run SFC. "System File Checker".
This is from "Ask Leo.com"

To run the system file checker press Start, Run, and then type in SFC followed by its options.

The most common usage of SFC is this: "SFC /scannow"

This might help.

I have similar trouble periodically with my Toshiba Satellite.
For me, A restart won't fix it, but a cold reboot makes it work.

Check out this article too.

If all appears ok when you look at your audio control (no mute, volume ok etc.) look in device manager for sound / audio device. Does windows think it's functioning correctly. If no, make repairs by reinstalling or updating driver(s). If yes, you can try deleting the sound card and then reinstall it. Depending on what version of windows you're running, windows may take care of the install for you by simply rebooting.

If you want some more specific advise, provide some more details about your computer and operating system.

free Radcal
You might want to run Free Belarc Advisor

This will describe everything in your system and makes it easier to tell people about your system.

Another one is SIW Standalone. Left column, 2nd line down.
This one will give you an unbelievable amount of info on your system. Everything you ever wanted to know, but were afraid to ask.
And NO, it doesn't send your information to anyone either, as was once stated.
