to go camping? I was asked this Sunday when I stopped to fill up on the way home by a guy in a 4 banger rice burner at the next pump.
I told him I don't keep track of the cost I don't want think about it.

do you keep track what it costs?

Yes, how else would I know how to budget? Makes total sense to keep tract. But to answer his question, I would have to have had more info. Like where are we going, how long, etc.

I keep track of costs because 95% of my travel and camping is business related and my cost isn't going to be the universal norm by which others' are measured.

The rice burner operator was either a little curious or being a little sarcastic. But, he/she definitely wasn't thinking. My response would have been to answer the question with a question... "How much does it cost to take a vacation?"

For a 3-day weekend, about $100 to $120. That includes gas, camping fees, ice, and adult beverages. I don't include food, cuz we eat what we would have eaten at home.

Maybe what they were trying to do was generate some conversation. RVing isn't about saving money but rather enjoyment of a lifestyle. So, perhaps a simple open ended question like " I take it you have some interest in RVing?" might be a good response. Then see where it leads.

Camping in the Williamsburg area of Virginia approx $500 for the week (gas, food, drinks, campground fee, etc. )

Wife shopping at outlet stores: $1100.00

It's still less expensive to just go camping.

One big difference would be if you have a TT or a MH. If I worried about the cost, I'd stay home which ain't happening. It cost me $162.00 to fill up Saturday in VT. "If ya wanna dance, ya gotta pay the fiddler"

I really do not know. It would take too long for me to figure it out. But, if I do not include the initial cost of the 3 vehicles, I can readily figure out the cost of certain specific trips. But, I don't see how it would help anyone.
