We're interested in getting a reasonably priced hitch mount carrier for campfire wood, barbeque and fishing gear. Any advice regarding size, brand, etc.?

It works great and lots of etras you can buy for it. We used it during our tent-camping days and I finally sold it to a co-worker who uses it for fishing!
Shop around, probably cheaper than CW.

Beware of overloading. It would be good to put the B on a scale once loaded for a trip and see that you are not exceeding the rear axle and tire load limit (which is in the owenrs manual, printed on the door sign for tire pressure, or available from the vehicle manufacaturer).
A serious aft CG condition isn't good in either airplanes or RVs.

We have a Stowaway II. It's one of the swing away models which is quite convenient. I think we paid around $400 for it, which included the cost of the dealer hooking up the lights for us. This one has a drain plug in the bottom so you can use it as a cooler or hose out the inside.
We use it for all of that messy outdoor stuff like you mentioned (grill, chairs, hatchet, shovel, etc)

When I got my van it had an old one on it, which I threw away..." who the hell ever wants one of those???".
Well... I just made a replacement for it because I did discover they are pretty handy! Mine is 2'x5', has tail lights and turn signals, and cost me about $15, which was for the lights and trailer connector as I used scrap materials from work to make it.
The map shows the states my wife and I have driven (or camped) in together.

I love the solution I found for my RT 170. Go to lets go aero and look for Gearspace. I got the smaller 20 cu ft size. What's so great for me is that the storage pod pulls or telescopes out away from the back of the van, and then I can open the back doors. I did put my spare tire inside; it was too heavy for me to lift up and down.

RiverkernB,
If you're looking for the most economical carrier, you may want to checkout the Hitch-Haul available at WalMart - about $50 plus tax. It is approximately 20" deep and 60" wide, and will carry up to 500 pounds; however, I agree with VernM regarding overloading the rear of your B. I added a lockable, poly work box (about $50 from Lowes) to the Hitch-Haul which gave me quite a bit of secure, weather-resistant storage. My only complaints are that the carrier sits a little low and hits the ground on steep driveways, and that you can' open the back doors when the box is bolted on. Still, it's a lot of storage for $100.
