We bought a carrier at Joe's for $44 (not swing away). I cut about 18" off the the left side so that it would fit with the spare tire in place. Even loaded, I could open the back doors ('05 RT 170)

Photo's of my rack are on Flickr Sprinter Rack

I wanted (needed) a rack I could use for different applications, that would allow access to the rear doors on the Sprinter - here is the result.

Wow, gmctoyman, your rack is extremely versatile - thanks for the link. The previous owner had beefed up the suspension to carry a mobility scooter so we shouldn't have concerns with weight on the rear end. We're digesting all the comments here and going over the options. Thanks for all your input.

You can also try the inexpensive open hitch mounted carrier from Harbor Freight.
That one was recommended to me last year and I like it fine. It takes a bit of assembly though...

I had one just like the one in the picture from camping world. i got it a JC Whitney for $89.00. Holds up to 500lbs. The only prob with most of them is stability. It kinda sways up and down on a good size load like fire wood. I took some tie down straps and on each end of the carrier I would secure the tie strap to the back door hinges on my class B. On my class C I put some o-ring bolts on each side of the Bumper and secured the tie straps to that. Other recommendation is get the rail kit to go with it and or cargo bag. Just the carrier carrying the wood is not secure. Hope this helps!

I bought a Hitch-Haul and have never used it once. Seemed like a good idea at the time though. Between security issues, lack of accessibility to the cargo doors, road grime, weight (I thought I'd carry my Honda EU2000 and spare water on it), I just never ended up using it. It sits in the garage, leaning up against a wall, taking up space.
