We are traveling cross country. Me, my 2 sons(ages 5 and 7) and our dog.
My dilemma is when we have to stop along our route to use the bathroom or if we want to grab a quick bite to eat at a fast food place. What to do with the dog. The dog can not come in the bathroom with us. I am not comfortable sending in the kids by themselves at rest stops etc.
My dog does not get along well with other dogs so tying him up outside the restrooms is not a good idea.
So that leaves me having to leave him in the truck. Which in certain places is going to be way to hot for even a quick trip to the restroom. I do have a battery operated fan. I do have one of those cool pads that you put in water and then it is dry and stays cool. I am not sure if the fan on and the cool pad are enough.
I would love to hear any other ideas. He is a boston Terrier and gets hot pretty quick.
I have also looked at the cool box personal air conditioner. But not sure if that would work in the truck or not.

Thanks!

Walmart's sells all kinds of 12Volt fans, clip on's, self contained and what have you starting a 10 bucks. Leaving him in the car can become quite costly if the humane society catches up with you. I know the K-9 units around where I live use a fan mounted on metal grating that fill almost the hole window to provide air to there dogs. I know I wouldn't be leaving him in any vehicle unattended. Not any real good solutions... I have left my spaniel (for bathroom break only) in the car with the a/c and engine running, with doors locked. On my new truck, I don't think I can leave the engine running and lock the door. Never have left dog in car while going inside to eat. Use drive-thru's and eat in car/truck or use a portable picnic table and set up in the shade. Possible dog crate in back of truck for this situation only with a cover to keep him/her out from sun? I understand the pet owner can be ticketed and pet taken if left in vehicle in hot weather in some states. This evening just heard on news a police dog died in a police car as engine quit and a/c did, too. Sad. Crating in the back end of p/u would be the only solution I can come up with. Hopefully someone will have a better one for you.

I am thinking it will have to be for bathroom breaks only. We travel with him a lot but usually there is two adults(DH is usually with us) and we tend to travel more when the weather is cooler. But, we are moving from CA to VA and me and the boys and dog are going on an adventure for 2-3 weeks! Stopping and seeing the sites etc. I am going as far north as I can for most of the trip.

Buy a slide in camper or 5'er with air conditioning and a built in generator; or leave the dog at behind.

We do as previously suggested and put the dog in a pet crate in the bed of the truck for short periods of time (with a bowl of water, of course).

We have a camper shell on the back of our truck so I don't think leaving him in there is any better then the car.

Leave one adult with him and the truck running and trade off eating and rest room.

Maybe try traveling in the mornings and evenings when its cooler and find a park, river, someplace to hang out in the heat of the day. I would think a cooler with sandwhich stuff, munchies, drinks. chips and dip that sorta thing then can stop at a roadside park or something these usually have bathrooms were you can wait by the door.
hope this helps
