As I drive along constantly shifting out of cruise control on small inclines to prevent the transmission down shifting and keeping constant pressure on the accelerator to save gas Ive been thinking of my 1946 Ford and its throttle control. You pull out the knob and set your speed. All it does is keep the accelerator in a constant position. What if we had a simular device with the safety features of the cruise control but all it did was maintain a throttle position, not speed? I can't help but think it would save a lot of gas?! What do you think?

edit: Fixed title.

When I pull a hill I do as you do, taking it out of CC. I find that whatever you put on a throttle to regulate the speed it will eventually have to be changed again and again, you cant beat the foot for good regulation of manual speed control when pulling a hill it's almost automatic, brain to foot, you can feel when it starts to slow down the slightest and needs more pedal.

My tractor has one. Just move the lever to the desired engine RPMs and go. Jeez, If I had that, the high/low range gearbox, 4wd, and independant brakes on my RV.....

Not sure the front end loader would work out so well.

Actually those were pretty common on cars at one time..... throttle knob and choke knob.

I've wished for a manual throttle many times. When driving through rolling hills (or just urban overpasses) I try to maintain a constant throttle position. I let it slow down going up hill and speed up going down hill. Otherwise you're burning extra fuel trying to maintain speed going up the hill, only to get on the brakes to keep from going too fast on the downhill.

This is how truckers drive and why they hate cars on cruise control. Driving this way saves gas but doesn't work well in traffic.

As one of the previous posts mentioned, the choke and throttle knob were the stantard on many dash boards.
Iv got one on my 69 Bronco.

Once the rpm's drop enough. The trans will down shift on inclines and hills anyway.

CC is nice on the flats only. Otherwise useless in the hill country.
Used to like the old throttle control on the older vehicles.

So, now that we all agree we wish we had a throttle lock, how do we put one on our land yachts? There has to be a good aftermarket for 'em.

That's why we hate them too!

I would think it would be easy enough to make a cruise control that would have different modes that the vehicle driver could select: Hold Speed, Best Economy, Stop At Every McDonalds, ....

The hard part would convincing the OEMs or after market suppliers to develop them. The present price of fuel is a lever one could use to make them consider it. There could be quite a market for this feature in all kinds of vehicles these days. Since the experts would have us believe that fuel will never decrease significantly there should be a long term market for it too. Like most of you I don't have any contacts with the right people. Perhaps one or two of us do and that could be all it takes to make it happen. If Ford or even a third party were to make an E-series controller with these types of features it would almost certainly be retro-fittable. The market for retrofits would be quite large instantly compared to the annual production market which will grow large but only over a long time.

It's too bad the idea came out in a public forum like this, it could be patentable if nobody has already done so.

People now-a-days are not too smart.
Someone will forget to push the throttle control back in on a panic stop.
