Put a few sheets in a glass of water. Let it sit for 4 hours or so and then give it a gentle stir. If the paper breaks up, then it's OK to use. Not to plug a product but..Sam's Club Members Mark brand is cheap and does break down very well. I have been using it and have been happy.

I've started using Scotts single ply package is marked "septic safe".
Works for us, at least you don't get poop on your hands as that Rv paper tears if you look at it.

Not only do we need a black tank safe TP, but we also have a sand mound for our septic at home. We use Scotts, but every now and then I test a few sheets to make sure it is "friendly" to both the tanks. Get a old glass/plastic jar enough to hold about 3 cups of water and put in about four sheets of the T.P. and shake the jar a little, if the TP breaks apart very easy, you are good, if not...do not use.

Use the jar and water test but do not add a lot of water (ie your holding tank doen't get a lot of water with each use).
I would recommend for the test 1 cup of water and two sheets of TP in each jar for the test.
I have seen 2 ply and 3 ply TP break down better than RV brand TP and I have seen 1 ply that hasn't broken down well at all.

I lived in the country and had an above ground septic system and I used Scott only. Moved to Florida and again had a septic system, used Scott only. Started camping with a toy hauler, then 37' class A, now a 40' class A. I have used Scott ONLY and I haven't had any trouble. Oh and by the way, you're right the RV toilet paper is like sandpaper.

I use any thing that is two ply and septic tank safe. I found with one ply you have to use more paper and that is a waste or a lost cause, no savings there. I use Happy Camper in the tank and never had a plug up yet after 30 years of camping. I also use a Quickie flush to clean out the tank.

Use whatever you use at home, we do. Frankly I think this whole "special rv paper" thing is a scam. Think about it, the TP is just going going to sit in the tank for a short period of time, then get dumped.
I have heard this paer/water/har test over the years and have to ask...where did this get started? Black tank safe? TP is TP.
Use what you but is used to, use plenty of water when flushing and dumping. Save that money for more beer.

TP might be TP, but you really do need the TP to break down, otherwise you wind up with large pieces sticking to the level sensors and you wind up fighting to get the level sensors to work right. If you use a good brand of TP that breaks down easily they you can keep your sensors working better and the black water empties out of the tank easier. The other thing to think about is sometimes you are dumping into a septic system ( not all RV parks are on city sewer systems) and we do want to be RV park friendly.
