I was wondering if most people use a surge guard even if they are not full-timers? I guess it only take one bad experiance and you'd wish you had one. I was recently checking on line to see what they cost, etc and I was surprised to find out that they were around $400. Is there a brand I should look at? I am looking at the portable type. Thanks!
Mr Steve,
I just purchased a Progressive surge guard. As you say, it cost about $400, but I felt that with all the electronics in the coach, it would be a worthwile investment should there be a problem. You can think of it as an insurance policy against electrical damage should something happen.

Your right. I need to get one. Is there a reason you went with Progressive surge guard?
Mr. Steve,
I looked around and read some reviews and thought that, for the money, it would be the best buy. If I remember correctly, it seemed to have the highest protection rating of the surge supressors I looked at.
The above electrical prophalactic has worked well so far, at an acceptable cost.
Additionally, I use individual surge protectors for additional electronics that I want to protect IF I do have an electrical problem.
With a 32 year gamble, and RV history, considering our experience, I'm confident that we are adequately protected. Could something happen, sure, but no matter what, I'm still not gettn' outta this world alive.
Kinda like one plane crash, scares the hell outta some folks from flying. How many land and take off safely.
So many scare tactics out there for everything, we can go nuts trying to protect ourselves from everything.
I also use an adequate water pressure regulator, and water filtering system.
Everyone has their own idea as to how much protection they want and/or need.
This is just my humble opinion, but like all of them, it's just one. And we know how oderous any of them can be.
Good Luck, and don't forget to enjoy the ride.
What me worry!, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow!

Look at progressive industries they have portable and hardwired . The hardwired have remote display. The progressive industries do a little more than surge guard though surge guard is a fine pick to.

Suggest you explore carefully and get lots of good opinions from this site. I bought the expensive one @ Camping World for "insurance" purposes and so that I can sleep nights. But, there again, I also bought a lot of insurance that I haven't needed yet. Thank God. They should make these standard on RVs from the factory - just like the safety outlets now federally mandated in the kitchens and bathrooms in RVs.
BIL had and uncle wire up a 50 amp service for his 5er. Uncle blew the instal and, the surge blew pretty much everything in the 5er. Last cost I heard had gone over $10K and not complete. $400 surge protection deos seem quite cheap when put in context. The research I have done and the comments on this forum lead me to the Progressive Industries products. They have a far broader capability than the others I have researched.
