I mostly listen to country music, but Sugarland goes over the top with the "twang." Why can't they just sing? I can't stand to listen to them because they are overdoing the hick.

Personally, I think this is just the "way they sing," nothing fake or phony. They aren't adding any "hick," it's just "them."
I saw them on TV a couple days ago singing something from their new album and they were excellent.
I have nothing of Sugarland's yet but I do love this song.
