My brother in law is having a 50 amp plug put into his garage for us to plug into when we stay at their shore house....It should be a 50 amp breaker with one hot from each "phase" plus the neutral and ground....the plug is being placed right next to the 200 amp panel in his garage...my hookup was done by a friend of my brother's when I wasn't home and it works just fine.---(wish I was home when he put it in--but there is a 50 amp breaker --dual phase---in the electrical box now at my home... am I missing anything to tell my brother in law? (boy what a a loaded question).....

Thanks...

Sounds like you got it right. Each hot leg is 120 volts plus the ground and neutral. This web site has some great wiring diagrams that will help guide you.

What you want to install is no different than a 50 amp service for a stove or dryer. The plug you want is a bit different, it's technically called a NEMA 14-50

Don't confuse the 50 amp and 30 amp hookup. In the 50 amp you have two 120 volt wires and ground. In the 30 amp you only have one 120 volt wire.

A friend of mine insisted that the electrician wire his 30 amp with 240 volts and burned up several appliances in his trailer.

I got a 70 amp outlet from Lowes. It has the correct 50 amp, 240v plug plus two 20 amp 120v GFCI outlets in an outdoor box. 50 amps for when you are there and 20 amp plug for him when he needs to plug in the electric hedge trimmer.
