Does anybody use the regular "walmart" co detectors (with battery backup) in their rv? I have one (first alert) in the fiver but is it safe to trust running a generator outside? Thanks

Many of us have run generators outside for years. We are still here to tell you about it. There is nothing wrong with Wal Mart detectors.

We don't seem to have heard from those who went cheap and picked the wrong detectors. Wonder why?

The reason that I am asking is that i read on this forum somewhere sometime ago that houseold CO detectors were not good for RVs. My generator is on the back end of the fiver and we are going on a trip in a couple of weeks where we will arrive at a Walmart late at nite and travel on to the campground in the morning. I plan on running the generator all the way down to walmart to cool off the RV and during the nite. We have never done this before and always had a "first alert" CO detector(houseold) on board. Just don't to NOT wake up in the morning and not make the rest of our trip.

We have a First Alert battery powered household detector (the semi-oval one with no display) in our class C that was bought at our local Ace Hardware... It makes no mention of NOT using it in an RV. It is tested monthly and so far seems to work fine.

I'm using a Home Depot one designed for home use. It's a combined LPG and CO detector. I even use a 12V to 9V converter so it runs off the camper battery and I don't have to mess with replacing the 9V battery. The bonus is that it draws 16mA, far, far less than "RV" detectors draw. It also features a CO PPM readout, and I don't know of any RV one that does. What a deal for one 1/4 the cost of a RV one, huh?
It's working fine two years later. And I know it works because if DW leaves her minivan idling after starting it in the morning, the CO detector will go off in the camper parked right next to it.

I use a round, digital, totally battery (no 120v) First Alert from Wal-Mart and it looks totally 100% identical in every way to the Atwood at the RV dealer except for the label (and the price tag.)

Mine had a test recently. I was parked in a rest stop with the door open on the TT with an 18 wheeler idling next to me. The CO monitor went off. I thought I had a problem, but about that time 18'er pulled out and shortly the alarm stopped. The alarm is one of the battery Walmart types.
