I have access to tickets to the Talladega Superspeedway races this October. I will have to tow into the innerfield in order to access my spot. I have learned that there a no hook-ups. I will be relying on my generator for power. I have never hook up to a generator before. Do I have to buy a special surge protector? Are there any other concerns that I need to know about? Any info will be appreciated. I would hate to ruin this trip by burning up something in the camper. Also, anyone who has done this trip in the past, if you have any sugguestions about it please let me know. I have been told that a water and sewer truck will roll around if anyone needs water or needs the waster pumped out. Will I need special connectors for this service or will the service company have these? Again, any information will be greatly appreciated..

There are about eight guys from where I work that do the Dega thing and they take four campers. They rent one of the porta potty's and split the cost. I can find out more info tomorrow, if you are interested just send me private message about what you want to know and I will ask them.

My wife and I did the race thing. It's a piece of cake. If you need water, sewer, or propane service, it's just a wave away. They have all the necessary hook-up parts to get the job done.

If you like to have fun, Talladega will be a blast. The infield is the place to be. We go to the Spring race and we're trying to put together a Fall race this year since the date falls on an off weekend for football. Water trucks, propane, sewer, ice. You name it, they have it going around. We rent the port-a-potty for the weekend ($105 IIRC) and it's definitely worth the money.
And yes, the trucks will have the connectors for your RV.

I'm curious, how much does a trip like this cost? Do you rent a site and pay for tickets too?
I would imagine most all the races sell out. How far in advance do you have to reserve to get a spot? Is it first come, first serve for location, or do you get a specific spot in the infield?

All of the infield is reserved spots only. There are first come, first serve lots outside of the speedway but people start getting there on Monday and Tuesday before the race weekend. Infield reserved spots range anywhere from a couple hundred dollars all the way up to $500+. Each spot comes with 2 infield admission passes. If you have more than 2 people going (which more than likely you do) then you can buy more passes for about $100 each. Which, in the grand scheme of things isn't that bad of a deal since you get to watch everything. 2 or 3 races, qualifying, practice, etc..
As a matter of fact, last Friday was the deadline for spot holders to renew their spots for the Spring race next year. What happens is that all the current spot holders have a chance to renew their spot for next year. Spots that aren't renewed go into the "upgrade pool" where in a few weeks the people that renewed their spot will have the opportunity to upgrade to a better spot (extra $$$) if they choose to. Spots that aren't taken then go on sale to the general public later on. When I first purchased my spot from Talladega it was in the 3rd row. The next year, during the upgrade period (after renewing my spot) I was able to score a front row spot. We love going to Talladega every year and we have friends who we have met over the years that go every year too. What's not to enjoy about a weekend of fast cars, good food, lots of drinks and thousands of other people who are there for the same thing?

I've been going to the fall race every year for the past 5 yrs. You will enjoy it.
I wait until I arrive at the track to fill my fresh water tank, they have a place on the left just before you cross the track to enter the infield. My fresh tank holds 56 gal and I also fill 4 - 6 gal water jugs, that way I don't have to purchase water from the water truck. There is usually just three of us in my camper and we can make it all weekend without having to use the dump wagon. I've never even had to use the extra water jugs, but I take them just in case.
There is a dump station as soon as you come out of the infield. I usually dump and flush my tanks there before we head home.
As for generator, I use two Honda eu2000's paralled together. I start them up and plug in, it's that easy. If your generator does not have a 30 amp plug, you will need the step down for a 15/20 amp plug.

If you need a 30 amp connection, check and see what type of connection your generator has. Most of the external gennys I've seen require an adapter for an RV style plug. Something line this - Link

If you are running a gen, make sure your CO detector is ok. Not much air flow usually to pull the fumes away from your camper or your neighbors.
A person from a town just south of us passed away from co poisoning at Indy 500. The fumes were from a camper next to them.
Dont want to be a kill joy, just would hate to here of it again.

I do both the Dega races every year. I stay just outside the track at Talladega RV Park, $350 for the week with power and water. Pump truck comes around to pump you out if needed or they have a dump station if you want to use the honey bucket method. They have a website www,talladegarvpark.com. I don't like being trapped inside the track. I got to both dega races and the Daytona 500 each year. Camping at Daytona gets a little sporty.
