There is a small gap around the pipe which is why there is a cap. The interior of the wall where the vent pipe runs can get water damage. Just replace the cap. They are one of the easiest items to replace. The hardest part is climbing the ladder.
We also discovered that as you drive down the roadway, the air is pumped into the blackwater holding tank, and then forced out of the commode, making the bathroom smell like a badly serviced outhouse. With the cap, the gases from the tank are syphoned out of the vent pipe.
If there's room for it to swivel there are some vent caps that will pull the gasses from your tanks on the road or anytime there's a wind blowing. I ran a stainless steel sheet screw into the marked spot to keep my tank caps in place.
I'm not impressed with the Forest River choice of the tank vent right next to the ceiling vent, but the big vent hood helps.
