Travelling in a couple weeks from MD to Yellowstone and GTNP - heading out via 80/90 and back along 70. Will no doubt be stopping in SD and CO, but are wondering about any must sees not too far off the beaten path along the route coming and going. Will be traveling with husband and his parents and have a 3+ week travel window.
Any thoughts?
We were thinking maybe Mackinac on the way out - but that would put us on 94 and unless we drop down to 90, we would miss SD sites. Aside from that, I am clueless and pouring through travel guides.
Mt Rushmore, Bad Lands, Devil's Tower, (Yellowstone), south to Grand Canyon. Turn right for Yosemite, back thru Las Vegas, Mesa Verde, St Louis Arch... better get home.. should be broke by now
Lots to see, it's a beautiful and diverse country...
A lot depends on where and how often you have already traveled and your plans for future traveling. I leave N Ga and two days later I'm in Colarado as the best way to see Kansas or most of S Dakota is at night. I can spend three weeks in just Co, Wy, and Utah and wish I had another week. I've traveled a lot and perfer the mountains/cooler weather over the plains and the bad lands.
Don't know when you will be getting on 90 headed west but I would recommend staying at Blue Mounds State Park just off I-90 in Minnesota. In the Black Hills area, must see things are Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Needles Highway, Badlands, Wall Drug, Corn Palace, and don't miss the Devil's Tower in Wyoming. There is also a very nice KOA just east of the Badlands near Belvidere. I think it's the Belvidere East. Very nice owners and restaurant with great Indian tacos. Spend as much time as you can in Yellowstone. I can't help you with I-70, we haven't been that way.
What we do often, is to stop at the welcome centers as you cross the state line. Always a nice stop for a rest and go inside and get visitors guide of the state. There is always wonderful ideas in there. Good reading and planning material.
Tons of places to see and do. Too bad you don't have more time. If you go thru Auroro Nebraska at exit 332 there is one of the best museums we have ever been to called the "Plainsman Museum"
Have a great and safe trip.

Sounds like we should forgo any real stops until west of Chicago at least? So, am thinking we will probably do a couple days of longer driving so we can get where we are going. I was hoping to find some interesting places along the way, though, too. Used to doing 8 - 10 hour days - three (of the four) of us driving so it makes it easier on the long hauls.
Some other suggestions for when you reach Tetons and Yellowstone are;
Yellowstone has a covered wagon ride out of the Roosevelt lodge. It takes you out to Pleasant Valley for a Cowboy BBQ with cowboy songs, for res call 307-344-7311.
At the Tetons; we loved the Barker-Ewing Float trip. We saw Eagles, Grizzly, Elk etc. Teton Float.
Also the Bar J Chuckwagon dinner and show was great. Teton Chuckwagon.
We spent the month of June in the Tetons and Yellowstone and had a wonderful time even though it snowed a little. Just another adventure. If you need any other informationplease PM me. Travel safe and keep a smile on your face and in your heart. Janet
