HI Our local Road Ranger fuel station has a "truck/car" pump at the big rig island it is a seperate pump and does not pump fast the first time I filled FIL truck we didn't know there was a different pump avaiable to use. Boy it was alot easier than using the big rig pump....LOL We didn't see the sign above the pump stating this purpose. If in doubt I would ask...Happy Trails

You shouldn't have any problems fueling your TV if you use the larger fueling stations on your route. We look for Flying J's, Petro's and other large volume Fueling stations on our routes. We do look for flying J's first as most of them do have RV fueling lanes that can and do accommodate larger RV's. We also carry the book called the Next Exit that lists different routes and what's coming up at the exit like Fueling stations that have Large Area's for Rv's and Trucks to fill up at.
We went on our first long trip with our fiver and new truck in may. Took a route we hadn't taken before with our new to us Diesel and wouldn't you know it...first time we didn't plan where we could stop cause it was backroads and no book to help there, we couldn't find a station with Diesel on our route.
Mind you it was a lot of back roads and not many towns either so we WONT be taking this route again and we go to this destination every year some times twice a year.
Now we carry a 5 gallon can of Diesel when we travel. Not fun for DH to walk to the next town looking for Diesel and a gas can to carry back to TV to fill so we could continue. Learned a very valuable lesson that day. Don't go BELOW 1/4 tank on fuel thinking that there will be a Station that has Diesel. At about 1/2 tank we start looking for a place to stop to refuel.

We just made the DisneyWorld trip from NC back in May. There are plenty of Flying J's, Love's, and Pilot facilities along I95, which I assume you will be mostly on? These work like a champ for those of us pulling large trailers. I would suggest you stick to these, and you shouldn't have any issues.

Thanks for all the great info, I knew I came to the right place!

It sounds like we’ll be stopping at the truck stops on this trip, and yes, its I-95 almost all the way. I have several of the exit/fuel stop directories and agree that they’re packed with useful info. I’ve been scouting out the truck stops on Google Earth, some of them are enormous, even I should be able to maneuver around in there. By “filling and move out of the way”, I assume that you mean, bring CC inside store, go out and fill up, then send wife inside to settle bill while I clear away from the pump for the next customer, then wait in truck in case I have to move out of the way again. In other words, there is not a separate parking area to pull into after pumping while you go in and pay. Is that how the truckers do it?

The Chevy/Duramax has been a pleasure to tow with. It feels very powerful and stable, even when we drove it over the mountain ridges in the western parts of Maryland and Virginia on our trip to Luray/Jellystone. It is a Crew Cab long bed with the 34 gal tank; I must admit filling it up with diesel the first time was a shocker, something like $130!!. But it tows great, lots of fun!

Thanks for the oil info. I talked to the Service Manager when I bought the truck and he also cautioned me to be careful and make sure correct oil is used.

Greetings Fellow RV'ers!

We are new to the RV world and are cutting our teeth on a Rockwood 33' travel trailer and 2008 Silverado 2500 diesel. So far, we've had two short trips that have been GREAT fun, and are now planning a much longer two day trip (MD to DisneyWorld). This will be the first time buying diesel fuel with the trailer attached.

I've read a huge number of previous posts about fueling at various types of fuel stops, but am still not too clear on a few things.

First, it seems that the large truck stops are the most accessible and convenient from the major highways, with plenty of maneuvering room. But, can I fuel my Silverado 2500 from the large diesel nozzles intended for large trucks (will it fit in my filler tube, does it flow too fast)?

Also, I've read conflicting posts on using ordinary VISA-type credit cards at these pumps. Can you use them at the pump? Do you have to go inside?

Any reason not to use the large stops?

Any other advice?

Thanks in advance!
John

I recommend the FJ RV islands and good ones are Carmel Ch., Latta, and Brunswick. The RV island in Latta is sort of strange to get to if you want the pump numbers to show up on the side you're fueling from. All three of these will easily handle your rig, but Latta could be a little tight getting into from the side nearest the store.

I've used the big rig islands, but try and stay away from them if the look busy since I already have a place to fill up my RV setup at. Fuel in Fla. can be more expensive, but the main Hess station at the motor plaza at DW had decent prices when we were there last Dec07/Jan08.

I just called Mobil/Exxon's help line this morning. After posting yesterday, it got me thinking. Anyway, the good news is that Mobil has already now changed their retail "Turbo Diesel Truck" synthetic 5w-40 to the new "CJ-4" rating. Any stuff you continue to see on the shelves with the old "CI-Plus" will be replaced by the newer stuff.

The Mobil guy said that Auto Zone is the first largest auto parts chain to have the new diesel approved synthetics coming to their stores soon.

Also, one poster suggested carrying an extra 5 gallons of diesel when traveling. That is excellent advice!

Stopping at the Flying J is good advice, but be prepared to wait if you plan on using the RV island. I have never had a problem using the "car" pump that is generally located on the center island. If you use the truck islands you will pay extra for credit purchases. Since we use a gas rebate credit card that offers 5% back on purchases made at the pump, we always try to pay at the pump.

If you haven't already done so pick up a Flying J RV loyalty card. It's worth a penny off and it's free.

Enjoy the trip!
