I'm looking at purchasing a 2001 Chevy 2500HD Crew Cab Short bed with Duramax/Allison drivetrain. It has 127,000 miles on it. It looks, runs, and drives good. Does anyone have any thoughts about these trucks, how many miles I can expect to get out of the Duramax, any bugs they're known for from that year, etc? The previous owner did have the new injectors put in at about 115K (evidently this is a common thing that GM took care of.)
Other than the injector problem, you should be good. I can't believe it made it to 115k without doing them! WoW! Everyone I know had them done before 40k. You're going to love the D/A pair.
Good strong truck. Enjoy it.

I had an '03 (same engine/tranny as the '01). Ran it to 138,000 miles and it was a literal horse.
Needed a little more passenger room and came across a great deal, so now have an '08, but in some respects wish I still had the '03.

77K and so far so good. This is my first diesel. I thought it would be a maintenance hog, but really nothing. I did notice smoke this trip when I hammered it, so maybe the injectors or something needs attention.
I have to advertise this because I am impressed...
I reprogrammed the computer, added about 60HP and fuel use went from 20-21mpg at 65 to over 26 at the same speed.....at 55 it's 28-29 and at 70, which I hardly ever maintained, it's above 20mpg. It was 15-16mpg and that's why I seldom went 70. Above 65 it seemed to need a lot of fuel....not a linear curve. I guess the added power really makes me use less foot. As for towing, 9 was about it at any hwy. speed, but 12-13 seems to be the norm now. I know there can be turbo and other issues when you pump these engines up, so I don't do any WOT pulls or abuse.

Noise from piston slap, and injector problems plagued this year. I would avoid this model.
2003 Jayco 308fbs eagle 33' tt, towed by a 2003 Ram 3500 slt, quad cab dually, cummins diesel ho, trailer towing package, with 6 speed manual. Hauls better 1/2, 3 kids, myself, and a 2003 ez go clays car.. I have added so far, neon lights, clearance lights, back up lights, black light, lift kit, mud tires, and everything necessary to make the golf cart street legal. It's now ready to spend the winter in the garage for more mods. More neon, strobe lights, alarm, a pa system, maintance, and whatever else that comes along. This golf cart does wheelies and travels thru 7 inches of mud when need be. Two honda eu2000i gens twinned to supply the electrical power. Latest addition an 04 Honda Goldwing. I'm just over 150K on the truck in my signature and the drivetrain is still running very strong. Don't listen to the naysayers who haven't a clue about these trucks.

the DMAX never had GM s gasser piston slap problem. I would check a all GM diesel web such as dieselplace.com for only GM diesel owners input. That way it eliminates bad info from us Dodge boyz.

two friends with 01's. Neither has had any problems and love their trucks. Neither has needed to have injectors replaced either.
With proper maintenance that truck should be good for 300,000mi.
It is not rare anymore for GM 5.7L gassers to go 300,000, so I feel quite confident predicting at least that for that diesel.
I have a 1996 GMC Yukon in my driveway right now that I am fixing for someone. It's rear door handle is hard to operate, and the owner wants it fixed. The Vortec 5700 engine in this Yukon has 310,000mi on it, and it has never been touched save for oil changes. Not even an intake gasket.
