in the planning stages for next year. The idea is to head south on I5 and see some of Oregon.

How is 126 from I5 to Florence? Keep in mind I'm used to mountains and 2 lane roads, that doesn't bug me in the least.

The plan would be to boot it south, overnight in Portland (ish) then day 2 south on I5 to 126 and hang a right. then make our way slowly back up to Portland and then home.

I-5 between Portland and Eugene is some of the most boring road in Oregon.
126 from Bend or Eugene is all good road.
97 in central Oregon is a good 2 lane road with lots to see in both Washington and Oregon.

ORBiker - thanks. This trip is the coast, although in research we're already working on the following trip to the central Redmond and assorted interior.

I just know that some roads up here look fine on paper but suck for an 35" MH and toad More and more we're thinking get to the bottom of the loop fast (IE I5) and then work our way back up 101 and see the pretty stuff there.

Another thought might be to: get below Seattle on I-5 and then work your west to the ocean. The Oregon coast is best viewed form the southbound lane. ALL the pull-offs are on that side.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you travel on I5 you DO NOT SEE Oregon! Remember the interstate highway system was designed to move large amounts of goods from point "A" to point "B" in a great hurry.
OK now the rant is over for now. So you are traveling from Canada and want to see Oregon? What sort of terrain are you interested in? Mountains, high desert ocean and the beach? Give me a hint and I can make some suggestions Also, how long are you planning for?

Driveby - with limited time?? your plan is OK but as the biker said the OR coast (101) is best from north to south ( we have spent a lot of vacatons on that coast). Have you done the Oympic Peninsula? PM me for more suggestions if you like.

OR - now that is the info I need to see. On paper doing the long boring drive at the beginning made sense, but if I cant get into any pullouts then south on 101, back via I5 it is!

and yes i know I5 isn't the scenic route, we'll have 8-10 days tops and would rather spend the time on the coast and boot it home.

the Olympic Peninsula is beautiful, been there and will go back.

Driving the Oregon coast US101 can be done in 2 to 3 days at a leisurely pace. That is driving all the way to the California border. Brookings is a nice town to spend a night on the harbor. From there you can head inland on 197/199 from Smith River Ca. Pick up I5 and head South to Medford and get on 62 to go around Crater Lake. From here continue east and get onto US97. Spend 2 or 3 days traveling back North stopping near Bend at the Lava Lands, High Desert Museum, and if you are interested there are several lava tubes and lava caves in the area that can be explored. US 97 can take you all the way back North to the border where you could grab hwy 3 over to Hope and back home that way. Just another suggestion.

Simple. Get to the coast as quickly as possible. Any time on I-5 south of the Columbia is a waste if you want to smell the roses.
