We are leaving Buffalo late friday and crossing Canada to Port Huron and then up to Mackinaw. We would like to get as far as Port Huron and then stop for the night before proceeding on to Mackinaw. Are there any Wal-mart's around to stop and stay for a few hours around Port Huron or even in Canada before getting to Port Huron that are safe and accept campers overnight? Or maybe a truck stop, rest areas?

In Sarnia on the Canadian side , there is a Walmart right off the highway. Not sure if they allow overnights there. There is a nice municipal campground in Port Huron that we have used as well.

You have a few choices - First, there is a 24-hour Wal-Mart store in Ft. Gratiot - about 4 miles north of the Blue Water Bridge on M-25. The second option would be taking first exit on I-94 where there is a Cracker Barrel with rv parking. Located behind the Cracker Barrel is a small campground run by the township.

There is a Michigan DOT Welcome center right by the bridge, the Welcome Centers allow overnight parking, the rest areas do not, go figure.

Thank you all for your replies, How hard is it to get into the township campgrounds at Port Huron, do you need reservations? and what is the cost? and how do you make contact with them?
Thanks again.

Lake Huron Campground isn't too far north of Port Huron. Probably a little expensive for just an over night stay, but it is another option.

The phone number for the Port Huron Township park is 810-982-6765. Do call ahead as they do fill up on weekends being right off the freeway. They are also across the road from a marina and get a lot of boaters camping on the weekends. I believe the cost is $20 - $25 per night.
If you decide on this park, it shares the same exit as the rest stop/welcome center mentioned in the earlier post. Instead of turning into the rest area, go to the traffic light, turn right and make a left to the Cracker Barrel - continue past the CB to the campground enterance. Should be perfect for your overnight stop.

Lakeport State Park is a great place, electric only hookups. We'll be there Thursday-Sunday.
