a comparable usb evdo modem and cellular router is all that would be needed to do the same thing, and would cost far less than the upfront charge for an autonet router.
But can you get the lower cost 1 GB monthly service with Verizon (assuming you only need 1 GB service)?

My reason for going this way exactly! All I hope for is consistent service with reasonable speeds for $29/month plus the hardware expenditure...1 GB is more than enough per month for me.
I did get an email response back from AutoNet Mobile on the explanation of plans:
From AutoNet Mobile wrote: The Basic service is $29 a month for 1G of data. Monthly Plus is $59 a month for 5G. Most people don’t need more than 1G. If you go over the allowance, we will contact you and ask if you want to be moved up to the Plus level.
I then emailed them for an explanation of an "annual" service plan (also listed on their service agreement)...waiting for a response, will post when received.
Thanks for sharing your correspondence with Autonet Mobile.
Whereas, I believe 5 GB far exceeds any monthly usage, I would find 1 GB too little.
Here is a usage report I posted last year.
For the last 31 days of usage from our trip to the northeast during May and June Sarah and I together used 1.7 GB of combined upload and download and used the connectin 91.25 hours. Note: this was 31 days of usage, not 31 consecutive days. Since there was no broadband as we traveled, we used WiFi whenever it was available.
That usage was for moderating, emails, and news/weather/sports information. Waiting until WiFi was available, we did not use the air card for uploading files or pictures.
pulsar, I agree that on a full time usage over one month 1GB could be a little low, but I would not be using the service for more than probably a half a dozen days a month...I guess fulltiming would tax the 1GB threshold, but for my current usage I think I'll survive.
More important to me will be the speed of service and availability in areas that I previously had troubles connecting with T-Mobile...since they (AutoNet Mobile) claim to have agreements with all major cell carriers, I'm hoping my connections in more remote areas will be better accessible with this service than experienced with T-Mobile...time will tell and I plan on posting my experience/results here, since I have not seen anyone else in the RV world using this service yet.
Now you've got me curious, I'll examine my T-Mobile bills for internet usage in my recent travels and see how much GB I've averaged. Never paid much attention to it since it is unlimited.
Thanks Gerry.. T-Mobile has different devices, The older hardware is speed limited as per your post.. What I own now is so limited (I had to switch to T-mobile for a week when AT&T messed up)
The new stuff (G-3 I think) hits DSL speeds
NOTE: I will want them to demonstrate it on the web site of my choosing before I lay any money on the counter

I think I was the first to bring up the Autonet service when it became available to Hertz rental cars about a year ago and I am still very interested in it so please keep us up to date on this service , Thanks.
Well, received the unit today, used a 12V plug I had for a small inverter and wired it to the router (wanted to keep it as a mobile device between vehicles), plugged it into the RV 12V outlet in the bedroom, and here we are online!
Not much of a user interface for changing settings, but I guess the idea is to K.I.S.S.
Was easily able to set it as a WEP secure network and assign a passphrase to it, and you can change the SSID and the login password for the settings screen. WPA security is not an option.
I've ran a couple speed tests from two different notebooks, download speeds are between 400 -500 mbps and the upload speeds are between 65 - 80 mbps, that's sitting here at the Jersey Shore.
As I've stated before, it's the in motion connectivity and speeds I'm waiting to see, as well as my destination connectivity and speeds...some short trips planned the next few weeks till our New Hampshire rally event in October, so stay tuned.

Hmmm... no WPA. Can you disable SSID broadcast (hide network name) or set up MAC address filtering?
Sounds like it might be the bare bones in security options.
I assume it acts as a DHCP server to dynamically hand out local network addresses. Are there any settings there that can be configured? (Network number, dynmaic address range, MAC filtering, static address assignments based on MAC?)

Alex, you keep citing rev-0, but what are the newer revisions really giving you? I still need to see speed and connectivity capabilities before I write this off...and no one else is offering $29/month as an option that I know of in the cell card business, except T-Mobile.
As far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out on this...keep an open mind, unless of course you work for Verizon...(are you in the big crowd following the Verizon user around? what a joke).
Alex, do you ever travel in an RV and check your connection speeds with whatever you use moving around? If so, how much better are they and how much does it cost you? How people can get so passionate about the tools they use (cell carriers/PC manufacturers) always amazes me, they are just tools.
Nevermind, now I see from your website where your interests lie, makes sense to me now. It appears you're not even an RVer...
