Yes, I put treats in the crate and he walks in - he's not afraid of the crate (nor would I use it as punishment - our Cattle Dog still sleeps in HIS crate, even though the door is open...LOL!) The crate includes a small blanket that smells like his mom and siblings, plus one of my socks; and his favorite chew toy. I even turn on a sound machine that imitates a heartbeat...LOL!!
I don't let him out when he fusses - except I do allow a middle-of-the-night potty trip, just because I'm not sure he can contain his bladder all night. He hasn't had an accident yet, so my timing must be OK ;-)
I think he just needs some time? He's a velcro dog - sleeps under my desk at work; or next to me as I sit on the couch. He's really trying to be part of the family, copying the older dogs - now he just needs to understand that he can sleep by himself.
Our pup was rescued from a puppy mill and had been in a 2 X 2 crate till she was 6 mos old and had to walk on the wire floor and was never let out---I am used to getting dogs to like their crates but this one freaks out---we thought we had her used to it till one day we went to the store for a short trip to see how she would do if we left and got back to blood on the floor and 3 teeth missing and the wires on the crate all bent up---worked with her some more and tried again and she shredded her rug and blanket and had her self all worked up to a frenzy---so we gave up and now she rules the roost--she is the best dog I have ever had so I guess she figures if we dont crate her it is the least she can do for us

I made the same mistake. Wife and I got our first puppy "Carrie". We got home and had the day with her. We had full intention of having her crated at night. Wife left for work that first night. I put dog in crate then went to bed. Puppy whined and cried, I just wanted to sleep. Dog slept in bed with me...I caved. She slept in our bed for 2 years, till we got second dog "Ace". She has not slept with us since...Carrie now sleeps with our son. Better him than me!
He is a cute little "rascal" thanks for the picture, good luck and hope he sleeps peacefully in his crate soon!
Steelpony, sure glad you rescued that poor little puppy!
