In Illinois we have what is called an , Open Road Tollway system, that is if you have an I pass, you need not stop at the toll plaza, but you drive through at the posted speed, no gates. But with the newer I pass transponders, you have now way in knowing if it worked as you drive through. No beep or nothing. So it is important that your vehicle is registered with the state plate number, to cross check these plates with the registered owner if your transponder fail.

I got ours thru Pennsylvania. You can go to www.paturnpike.com to get information. They will take your credit card number, and you'll pay thru that as you use your EZ Pass.

I have friends in NJ and NY that just set the easy pass on the dash. They use it in different cars so they never stuck it on the windshield. It works fine as long as they remember to put it in the car they are driving.

The EZ Pas sis an RFID tag. It will work almost anywhere inside your car - except in a foil bag.
I've had mine in the center console, the floor, and the glovebox and they all still work.
The key is NOT to mount it. Just throw it in whatever car you are driving.

We now have the blue I Pass that worked well on our recent trip to Maine. Worked in IL, IN, Penn, NY, Mass, and Maine. This thing figures out if you are just a motorhome, a motorhome towing, or just a toad - toll gets adjusted automagically - no idea how it does that.
The heavy duty velcro-like clips have worked well in many vehicles for years. I find it easy to remove and replace the transponders. One set of small tabs stays permanently on the windshield, and you just take off and re-attach the transponder as needed. This we do frequently with the Jeep, since we need to remove its transponder when being towed behind the motorhome - but it needs its own transponder when running free.
As I understand it, the transponder receives a signal to "wake it up" a mile or so before the toll booth - this helps conserve the battery. So, I am told, if it is not mounted on the windshield, make sure it is placed where it can receive the "wake up call" well before the tollbooth. May just be a "tollway legend."

We always just throw it on the dash. One day in PA we did not have it in the MH so we stopped to pay. It said we had already paid so I stopped and waited for the tollbooth person to help. It turned out we had it in the toad and it could read it all the way back there. I held up traffic for a few minutes and people were not happy. As someone else said, make sure you register all of your vehicles in case there is a problem. In MD, you can even "run" the gate and they will scan your plates and charge your EZPass account. I would not recommend that but that is what they say in the brochures.

Ezpass is mounted with a velcro like tape (not hook and loop). It's really good stuff. You can get it thru ezpass for free just call and ask for their mounting kit. The only other place I have found the stuff..and I use it alot, is Radio Shack. It's made by 3M and its marketed as equipment mounting tape. Clean your windshield really good with alcohal before installing.

I am living proof that they check for the matching plate and vehicle. I bought a new vehicle and forgot to inform them. Mass sent me a violation form for 50 bucks. They said even though it was the same plate, the new vehicle has to be updated. They waved the fine but it was a wake up call to me to keep it updated. BTW the fee waving was after filing an appeal, sending a letter and all sorts of time spent for me. Never again!! I keep on top of the info.
That was the second fine I recieved. First one was when i stopped on the MAss Pike to get an additional transponder. They shut off the transponder i entered the pike with. I got fines all the way to PA that time. That was a battle as well with MA. I just stopped to get an additonal transponder and they listed my existing one as lost/stolen. many hours later that was straightened out.
Moral--Dont take the chance. Keep the info up to date. If you get the "Call E-Z Pass light"---Call! Dont wait for them to call you!!

We have the SmartTag/EasyPass from the state of VA though we live in PA.
I have a transponder for the motorhome and one for the toad.
We will be leaving for the Jersey shore and using the PA Turnpike, the AC Expressway and GS Parkway.
Do I put one transponder in the toad and one in the MOHO? I've read in another post that the toll booths will correctly charge you using only one transponder??
Would appreciate some advice on this as I don't want to be double charged for the toad.
