I90 west to
I88 toward Bighamton
I81 to I77S
to I95S to I4W to Orlando and follow Mickey
This rooute may take an extr hour but misses most metros (Baltimore & DC) and the Scenery is great. Much better than the Jersey route. I'm just down the road in Rotterdam :-)

I think that you need to take I-26 to get from I-77 to I-95...but that is a great route, we used it to travel from RI earlier this summer.

We agree with GESTANTON, we have used that route for two years now and is only way to go. Fuel prices drop just below Binghamton, NY at the PA Line. Stayed at Fort Wilderness last winter for a week. Good Luck and keep control of your trip.

just do not get caught off guard. When you exit of the 81 onto the 77 after aprox 10 miles you will encounter one he** of a MOUNTAUN down grade for about 8-10 miles. When the signs say slow hill a head do what they say especially if you are not a diesel and are not prepaired. Take the route it is the best way south. NO traffic and NO tolls. But be aware.

Just check out the construction websites before the trip, as Rte 81 in Shuylkill County (south of Hazelton) was under construction in early August and reduced to one lane for miles. On our way down we saw huge traffic lines heading north on a Saturday, and they were there two weeks later when we came back.
We jumped over to Rte 78 via Rte 501 at exit 104. Rte 78 was not much better, traffic was not bad, but under construction and the old sections were pretty bumpy. We towed a 29 foot travel trailer and wished we had a fifth wheel set up. I'd stay with Rte 81, but maybe plan more time or change the time of day that you go through? When we were headed south we saw all the traffic on a Saturday at around noon, maybe 1:00. On the way north it was at about 10:00am.
On another note, we really enjoyed the scenery along Rte 501. I will be planning a trip into this part of PA someday to just explore. Looks like a great trip in the fall or spring.

It is a good downhill run, but with his duramax/allison combo he should be fine. Good warning, as the west side of the slope is much more gradual so you may not realize how much of a downhill run you'll have. Great views if the air is clear. My wife and I really enjoyed this section - could not even get the kids to look out the window as they were having too much fun bickering/fighting.
Best benefit of this route would be the cheap fuel price along the way. Gas was as low as $3.39/gal second week in August.

I-81 ha been under construction somewhere in PA continuously for the 30+ yeats I have driven it :-) I took it to TN in May. and although there were a lot of construction zones I don't think I actually saw any work being done. It's Still the best ride with some beautiful views south of PA.
