Try Houston Recreation Area in the Bankhead National Forest. About 35 miles west of Cullman off of US 278. Nice clean campground. I camp there often (was there last weekend). 3 loops 86 sites you won't have to worry about crowds or being far from restrooms/bath facilities. Lake Guntersville is nice but for tent camping Houston wins big with me. The primitive area at Guntersville is just piece of ground in the pines as are most state "primitive areas". No privacy, tables, fire pits ect. They do have some decentt hiking trails.

Oak Mountain State Campground southeast of Birmingham is pretty nice - a river with swimming area, picnic area, nature trails - good place for the kids. Lots of tent spots, some with water - check them for availability though!

A lot depends on what you are looking for. Are you wanting to be in a campground with activities to do or backpack into nice scenic places. Oldest sona and I are Boy Scouts and do a lot of camping. Give more insight and I will see what I can do to help.

This a fun place to visit if you like caverns.

Desoto is closed until at least January per conversation with the ranger a week ago. However they do have dedicated primative sites that may be open if you really want to rough it. Beautiful location, lots to see and do while there with DeSoto Falls, Little River Canyon, hiking trails everywhere...

I second sequoyah caverns camping. We are going in October.
I also like Cheaha State Park. It has lots of hiking and is beautiful in the Fall.

Looking for a place to go with the kids 10 and 9, that has things to do for them. Like fishing and other actives that they will like.

TheGov, you might want to check out Oak Mountain. Not that far from you, fishing, canoeing, paddle boats, horseback riding, trails to hike, BMX track, RC Car track, golf, animal petting farm.
