Take I-81 south to I-77 through North Carolina. Follow I-77 to Columbia, SC where you pickup I-26 toward Charleston. Grab I-95 southbound and look for the exit to Daytona.

Fredericksville VA. Follow 95 south to 295 around Richmond VA.

This is the fastest route with the least traffic. Use it at least once a year round trip from central Fl to Altoona.
