I am considering replacing my TracStar 360 dome satellite antennae with a MotoSat HD antennae for DirecTV. Has anyone had this antennae installed? If so, what has been your experience? Any problems? Can it work with TIVO requiring two cable inputs?

We have an SL5 which has performed perfectly and has exceeded our expectations. We felt the few extra dollars spent on it vs the winguard were well placed as we found obvious quality differences when examining the two units side by side.

You can't use a Cable capable Tivo with satellite service. They don't work the same way. DirecTV used to have a Tivo box buts its obsolete as far as HD is concerned. There is a new Tivo coming out next year that will be updated, until then its the HR20 and 21 which are now very good DVR's.

I just put the Winegard on and am very pleased. Simple install, and much smaller control box. Also over $600 cheaper and very good quality. About 3 minutes from pushing the button to watching. The dish is the same size as the DirecTV home mount dish, so I expect to get better reception in a questionable fringe area like Alaska, but I haven't tried it there yet. Next year will tell.

I do not have the MOTOSAT HD

But I do have a Motosat T-2 Automoton DP Dome and "Happy" does indeed describe me

Motosat antennas are very well built.. Yes, some folks have the occasional problem but this is true of all companies and the problems tend to be minor and Motosat Customer service is US based and tends to be good.

When I say US based, I mean Salt Lake City, UT and I've been there twice

Both times on the worst day of the year for working on the roof of a Motor home

Once was minor adjustment

once was the idiots locally put on the wrong antenna.

Thanks for the replies. Do you carry a spare (and large) satellite dish for those instances when trees block your roof dish?

I too was thinking of installing either a Wineguard or MotoSat. I was looking at not only cost, but weight and size. To my surprise the MotoSat, although a bit more expensive was smaller and lighter then the Wineguard.

YES, I do, and I put a standard Antenna Switch (NOTHING FANCY) in the line near the receiver "A" = Above (Rooftop dome) B=Below (COnnection for ground mounted tripod)

With luck, the switch

I purchased the Moto Sat after many hours of comparison against the Winegard. It is awesome!!! Winegard is a chep antenna that did not convince me. All you have to do is push the button and you will be watching HD Tv in no time... I will buy it again with no hesitation!!!Good luck!!!

Alaska is more than a "questionable fringe area".

We lived in Anchorage before we started full-timing. Dish Network is sold there, but you need at least a 30" dish. DirecTV is not sold there at all because the signal just doesn't make it there.

When we travel up there (and down to Mexico), we need to use our 32" dish soon after leaving the Lower 48.

Did you check real good and close to notice?
1. There is more gear slop in the Motosat. The mounting plate, while being longer on the Motosat, is not as wide.

2. The Motosat has plastic/vinyl covers on the mount - the Winegard has metal.

3. Manual stowing is far more difficult with the Motosat, if it should prove necessary.

4. The Motosat drive system is not sealed and uses a greased chain drive that will attract dirt.

5. The Winegard is a completely sealed system - all electronics and drive gear is sealed in a waterproof metal housing.

6.The Motosat IDU uses flashing LEDs for status. The Winegard has an LED display with messages.

7. The antenna type on the Winegard can be set from the display without looking up stuff in a manual.

8. The Motosat elevation pins are not plated and rust quickly.

9. The Motosat uses a center pivot point instead of the ring bearing on the outside edge that the Winegard uses.

10. There is more side-to-side flex in the Motosat - when deployed

11. The Motosat has needed several software updates to find the satellites. The Winegard NONE
