I just called the salesman to touch base about picking up the new TT on Friday. I also wanted to confirm that I was getting the Equalizer brand hitch rated to 10,000/1,000 (my tongue weight is going to be a bit over 800 lbs.)
He tells me that when I was saying "Equalizer" that he assumed I meant an "equalizing" weight distribution hitch...
He is now telling me that they were going to put on the Reese Weight Distribution hitch.
I was not at all prepared for that, as I have studied the Equalizer and like that it does weight distribution and sway control all in one hitch.
I know absolutely nothing about this Reese hitch.
He is supposed to call me back with further information. I admit, I began himming and hawing about this deal because I specifically asked for an Equalizer. I thought that was pretty clear. The only reason I brought it up during our conversation is because I had read here that sometimes they try to give you a knock-off hitch.
Can anyone provide insight here?
Thanks in advance.

I have an Equal-i-zer but will try to provide some info on Reese. Reese makes a normal weight distribution hitch that would require added sway control. Probably priced a little less than the Equal-i-zer, depending where you buy it at. Reese also makes the dual cam, which gets great reviews on here , has built in sway, and is priced a bit more. If I'm wrong on any of this, someone here will correct it. Hope this gets you started. Reese Hitches
The Reese HP Dual Cam can be added to any Reese WD hitch and is an excellent system. Cost should be comparable. I added the Dual Cam to my Reese hitch for $147. I love the thing, makes towing fun again.

Yes, I believe they were going to give you a standard WD hitch with an add on friction sway control. if they can`t get you the EQ that you want, then a Reese Dual Cam would be the preferd hitch. I like it for the fact it goes a step farther than the EQ and has the detents in the bars to keep the trailer straight. where the EQ will just try and resist the sway and then stop where it`s at instead of trying to return to center like the DC does. cost is compareable between the two.
As you can see I use the Reese DC HP and it does a tremendous job of keeping my 32ft. 8500lb TT behind my X. even in crosswinds and semis passing.

Thank you all for your quick replies. Salesman called back and said that the Equalizer is a $650.00 hitch and he can't do that for the price he quoted me.
I asked him if the Reese hitch he was going to put on would cover weight distribution and sway and he said no. Just weight distribution.
Asked me if I still wanted the trailer. I said no. I explained that I was disappointed that I had spoken with him many times about this deal and always, always spoke of the Equalizer by name and I felt I was misled. This is a place that I would have to drive 3 hours back and forth from for service. They had the trailer I wanted, but I will find another or order a new one. Something tells me they are all crooked though. Don't think I've dealt with one who wasn't yet...
Thanks again for your help all. Sounds like both hitches, set up properly for WD and sway do a good job. It came down to principle on this one...
Yep. I was supposed to get an Equalizer, but was told that the set up of my TT and the Equalizer would require some significant modification to get it to fit my rig. They offered teh Reese dual Cam. I ahve had no issues in the 4,200 miles I've amassed so far. I've been in some less than good weather - wind, storms and have towed at 65-70 MPH (please don't shoot me folks) and have had no issues. It has been a rock solid set up.

I have found that you will pay through the nose to get a hitch from a trailer dealer. Get the hitch first from a hitch dealer, ebay or where ever, then get your brake control and mirrors, etc. Trailer dealers love to set you up with a package. One dealer in Mesa, AZ wanted $2200.00 to install the hitch and brake control. The hitch slides into place and 1 pin holds it. The attaching parts to the trailer tongue has 2 bolts to tighten. If you get a seperate sway control, it requires 4 to 6 holes drilled for the ball support. The brake control plugs into existing wiring in many cases. Anyway, I got everything and installed myself in less then an hour, for about $300.00.

I second this! I completed a 5000+ mile cross country trip this past summer and the Reese HP Dual Cam worked exactly as intended. I've never owned the Equalizer brand,so I have nothing else to compare the Reese system against.
