This is actually for my neighbor who has a fifth wheel pulled by a Dodge 2004 with a Cummins 5.9 engine (2500 series).
Now the problem he has started yesterday when coming up to a stop sign the truck just died. He cranked it over and he finally got it to fire again to make it home. But as he arrived it stalled again. So we changed the fuel filter thinking that was the problem, but the engine will fire and run for a couple of minutes then die again. What do you guys think might be the problem.

Sounds like the lift pump went. It should be located on the back of the fuel filter canister, it looks kind of like a roll of quaters. when you turn the key on it should buzz for a few seconds. if you bump the starter (don't start it) it should buzz for about 20 seconds. in 2005 they moved the lift pump to the fuel tank which is what they will do to your friends truck as the old style pumps are no longer availabe. Mine went at about 50k miles. it's a common problem. the lift pump is covered under the Cummins engine warranty for 5 years/ 100k miles with NO deductible. Many dealers will try to get $100 from you under the 7/70 warranty. you may have to take the owners manual with you to prove it. If he is out of warranty I have heard that the retrofit kit (just the parts) is $300-$400 from Dodge?

Do not drive that truck any further. I would also guess the pump is not operating. If it is driven too far, the injectors will get too hot from lack of fuel lubrication, and then you'll get to replace them too.

Here is a link to a place to get the replacement lift pump that mounts to the back the fuel filter. http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo.asp?number=PUMP_FPD4089602 A friend of mine with a 03 Dodge replaced his in about 45 mins. I think the in tank lift pumps are much better, but if one goes out in the fuel tank it would be much harder to change your self on the side of the road.

SAS is 100% correct in everything he stated.
Mine started doing it about 20 miles from home when I caught a stop light. Boy does you heart sink when you are sitting at the light with traffic behind you and it won't start. Finally started and I got less than a mile from home and I parked it on the side of the road. The two dogs and I walked on home.
Had the truck towed to nearest Dodge dealer (insurance paid the tow) and they knew what it was and repaired it under warranty at no expense to me. I was out no money but had the inconvenience of losing the truck for two day.
FYI: I had 68k miles at the time. Has been running fine since the repair.
If you have to ask why I drive a Diesel, then you will never understand.

Another note about the $100 deductible. My dealer printed out a computer report with my VIN number and said I would have to pay the deductible. I went and got the owners manual out of the truck and show them in print that I should not have to paid the deductible. They informed me they would have to show it to someone in the dealership that handle warranties. They next day they called me back and told me that I did not have to pay the deductible.
Hope this helps.
