The last couple times that I started my generator, the inside AC outlets, Microwave, etc did not come on in the usualy 30-60 seconds. If I shut the gen. off, and restarted it, the AC power came on in 30 seconds. Is this a sign that the transfer switch is about to go. I think it is an AOPA brand?

If so, how hard are they to replace? I had one go on another coach years ago, and the dealer switched it out in about 30 minutes. It looked like alot of wires that needed to be switched over. If you took the time to mark each wire it didn't look that tough.

Thanks
Bill

I would pop the cover off the box and see if the contacts are closing. There is a time delay which could be bad. If the contacts don't close that is the problem. The contacts could be dirty, I've had to clean mine with very fine sandpaper a couple of times, make sure the power is off if you do this. Also check all your connections, even if they feel tight loosen and tighten them, again, power off.

Sometimes the generator needs more time for the power to build up. Try waiting two to three minutes before you turn the A/C on. Especialy when they are cold the RPMs are not being created for the build up as the choke retards the engine.

Thanks for the help. When you say "make sure the power is off when cleaning the contacts", do you mean have the generator off. The battery power doesn't affect the transfer switch does it?

thanks

The power off means shore power and genset turned disconnected. 12 volt, no.
I would check all the connections from the genset to the contacts in the transfer switch. There may be a circuit board in the transfer switch with plug in connectors. Check and clean these. Apply some electric grease on them.

make sure all the power is off, if you don't have this much knowledge you might what a shop to look at it? but for my 2ct's i would think the gen isn't coming to power as quickly as it was, causing the delay, i would start w/a gen tuneup and make sure i have good gas. 87 or higher, no mix. you shouldn't load the gen for? i always give mine a couple of min. to stablize, they (gen's) do not have full power right away.

who left the light on? is it me or are we leaning downhill. where did the dog run off to

OK thanks. The generator is diesel and it is still pretty warm here (75). I'll open the transfer switch box and take a look.

Thanks

Whoa, this might be totally unrelated to the transfer switch and be a generator problem. Check the voltage at the transfer switch or the gen next time it happens.

It might be the generator, it might be the transfer switch and .. Well, do thise appliances that do not come on work when you plug into shore power?

I've seen a lot of cases here where someone had a simple tripped breaker or GFCI and the device in question did not work on either Shore or Generator.

Also, on the generator there are usually 2 circuit breakers.. On mine when one trips half the rig goes dead including one A/C, and either the microwave *OR* the water heater

It could also be an inverter with it's transfer switch that is causing the problem.
