HI,
having a problem with my battery not charging. When I have shore power plugged in, the guage says full battery charge.
when I unplug the shore power its completely dead in the trailer. guage has no lights on it. everything is dead in the trailer.
I have flipped the breakers and hear the fan run for a short time (2 or 3 seconds) on the converter but its not charging.
Its a new battery (6 months old). I checked the battery with a volt meter and its got a charge. but nothing inside the trailer
have put the battery charger on the the battery for a couple hours and no difference.
When did you check the charge of the battery with a volt meter? When it is connected to the charger? That might be surface charge and that sounds like a flat battery.
The on board meter will always show full charge or charging when connected to shore power if its a simple OEM voltage meter.
The battery level indicator just indicates the voltage at the display panel, so it has no indication of the battery unless the battery is the only source of 12V power, and then it is a poor one.
Do you have a battery isolator that may be open? It sounds as though it is not connected to the 12V system. If the voltage across the battery is 13V or higher, it is pretty well charged. If there is no isolator, it may also be a bad connection to one of the two battery cables. Remove and clean both.
It could also be a bad cable or a bad connection between the negative cable and the chassis ground.
I had a similar problem with my travel trailer battery not taking a charge. My set up has a solenoid system that caused a Catch-22 situation. A solenoid had to engage for the battery to charge, but if the battery was dead the solenoid wouldn’t engage.
The way to circumvent this was to have the trailer cable (7-pin connector) connected to my tow vehicle with the tow vehicle running and at the same time have the power connected to shore power. This allowed the solenoid to engage and the battery to charge. I would then disconnect from shore power and the battery would charge while I was driving. I probably could have also stopped my vehicle and allowed the battery to charge on shore power. Your problem may be as simple (or as complicated) as this, it’s worth a try.
My RV dealer/repair shop thought this was a goofy set up so they rewired the system to circumvent the solenoid. I no longer have a problem charging the battery when it’s dead.
