Yep, there is the Kris's way and then the correct way!
....Kris, I just couldn't resist kidding you.
That's what makes this forum fun, doesn't it?
I was trying to memorize several wiring diagrams some publications present, till I come to simply conclusion. Black screw on first switch needs to be connected to the feed wire, the black screw on the other to the bulb. The other 2 screws need to be connected between switches and it doesn't matter if you cross it.
The same adding 4-way is just cutting into the 2 wires between the switches.
Really very basic, although not seeing the wires in the house can be quite confusing.

I just went through this in my house. I wish I could somehow get a copy of the page into my posting as it explains it very well.
I'm thinking that the reason for the confusion is that the switches are wired differently depending on how it is laid out. There are THREE different diagrams here for the wiring depending on whether the light itself, or the fixture, is AFTER, BEFORE or BETWEEN the switches.
Also the light junction box itself is wired differently for each variation.

I wired our entire house (extensive remodel job) using my "Black and
Decker Home Wiring Guide" - it has VERY easy-to-understand diagrams, including various ways to wire a 3-way switch :-)

There are only 3 wires in each switch box red, white and black. The light is between the two switches.

It would be the 1st diagram I posted earlier, you just have to verify which color was used for your common. It could also be a bad wire in the box at the light.
