What I do is cover both nostrils with your finger and that gives them the moment to catch their breath and it stops right away.
I leaned over and did this to someone else's chihuahua at the park the other day. That was a bit nervy of me, when I thought about it, but the owner was amazed that the wheezing stopped just like that. People usually think something is seriously wrong with the dog until they learn differently.
My Pap does this occasionally also. The nostril thing always works. The only time he wes under anesthesia was when he was neutered and there were no problems.

Wow, thanks again. I tried the nose trick and the throat rubbing and both worked almost immediately. I've heard dogs do this from time to time, but this little pap seems to do it a lot more than "usual"--maybe 15 times a day. However, it does seem to happen mostly when she is running around or getting excited. Now I will just help her out with my magic trick. Judith
Daisy our Cockapoo does the same thing occasionally. I can't really say it happens when she gets excited because she gets excited every time we walk into the house! I asked our vet about it and he said it is a reverse sneeze. I usually just pick her up and hold her but will try the finger over the nose trick.
Isn't it great that something like this can be discussed and possible remedies found? I love this forum!

Our min pin does this as well. She doesn't wear a collar or harness, so nothing like that could be the problem. Isn't it how funny that it seems so serious the first time it happens and then you find out that not only is it not serious, but it's pretty common. Now, it's just more embarassing when someone else sees her do it.
