In August we purchased a new 2008 Cedar Creek Silverback 5th wheel. While making the deal the dealership offer us several extended warranty packages. Of course, they hit you with this right when you spending a ton of money and expect you to make another sound decision. After some prodding, the manager then tells us we have up to a year to purchase an extended warranty but the price will most likely go up. We did not purchase at the time because we had a Cardinal TT before with no problems. We are just wondering how many people actually buy some type of extended warranty now with all the electronic equipment they are using. ex: awning, 3 slides, landing gear etc. It seems like there is alot more to go wrong on the newer ones.

Hate to admit it, but I puchased one at the same time I made the deal on my 5th. I did not take the time to really look it over, and in retrospect, I would probably not do it again. So many of the things that you are likely to need it for are not covered. Most of the items it does cover are already covered by the manufacturer for the first few years. And the biggest reason not to buy is the stipulations the warranty/insurer puts on you. I had one need to use mine for a spring/suspension issue. They would not cover the suspension because the springs didn't actually break, they were only flat. I spent more than a week trying to get to someone with enough knowledge to know that things can be broken and not actually be broke. Then I had to deal with the fact that the repair facility completed the repairs before an inspection of the springs by the insurer could be completed. The shop tried to explain to them that they had to remove the springs to inspect, and could not leave the trailer in the bay for days waiting for them to come out. Bottom line is I finally did get paid but it was a really frustrating experience.
Hope this is helpful to you.

We got a seven year transferable ext warranty...I'm sure that in that length of time something major will break or quit working. Also, the price of the ext warranty is negotiable.

Very true..but read ALL the 'fine print' very carefully. More that not many of these are "not covered" or there are stringent conditions placed upon them that make it very difficult to get reimbursed.

Lots of discussion re extended warranties, I'm not in favor of them. Dealers are not looking out for your best interest. These are big money makers for the dealer.

We bought the extended warrenty for our 2001 alpenlite. the cost was $2200.00 but we paid $1400.00. We do not have this as the time ran out and it was for 7 years. We lost $400.00 but who can tell for sure on this story what is best?

Sounds like your dealer did the same as mine. Did he tell you that you can extend the cardinal warranty for an additional year at $250.00/ Mine didn't . Later on I found out that you have to do this within ten days of purchase.
I did not buy an extended warranty. Consumer Reports say it is a waste of money and I have never bought one.

Does anybody know of anyone who had an extended warranty and used it successfully?

As I stated. I was able to get a reimbursment from my insurer less the $50.00 deductable. The total cost was a bit more than $749.00 I was refunded $695.00. If you have the time and patience go for it. Otherwise put the bucks in the bank and use it to pay for your repairs.

One other thing you should know.... These are NOT Extended Warranties as the term implies.... You are purchasing INSURANCE. READ IT CAREFULLY. They make their money by NOT paying the claims.

Many individual components have a warranty that is longer than the standard one year. Pretty much all initial defects should show up in the first year anyway. I passed on the warranty and so far I am out nothing and have the money in the bank waiting for a breakdown.

We added a 3yr extended warranty to our purchase of a 2000 Aerbus in 2005. We were newbies. We wanted the security blanket. We had a minor claim for some slide hydraulic problems in the first few months which was promptly paid. About a year after that, we had to replace the transmission - and it too was promptly covered, although after some serious phone calls. The tranny cost was more than the original cost for the warranty - and after a senior discount was applied to our $50 deductible, we paid $37.50 out of pocket. So, yeah, I guess we've used it successfully. Even so, we probably won't try to extend it when it expires in a couple months. We're a little older, a little more knowledgeable and a little poorer now.
