I'm not sure what type of surface you are attempting to clean, but both Spray-Nine and RV Black Streak remover work for me. Fantastic and several Dollar Store equals seem to work about the same as well.

Ive used diesel fuel soaked rag more than once and it does a great job especially on the gel coat boat also.

An '08 or newer diesel truck.

Next best thing I found is "Goo Gone" with citrus and some elbow grease.

The black streak remover from RV stores and Fred Meyer works for taking the gas exhaust stains off of the aluminum skin of my camper. I was that side, then spray it on while it is still wet, wash the back, then come back and wash just that area. Works every time. I can't remember the brand, but it seems to me that most stores only carry one. It is in a white spray bottle with a black and purple label and it says RV Black Streak Remover in bold letters.

I've been real happy with the results using Turtle Wax polishing compound applied with a damp terry pad. Buff when dry. Removes all streaks and oxidation. Follow with marine wax. These products are white and do not stain the filon/gelcoat the way some of the other suggestions can.

Yes, many solvents work fine but I went a step further and looked into preventing the soot buildup in the first place. My solution: a turndown exhaust tip. Here are some examples but I purchased mine elsewhere. Just "Google" turndown exhaust tip. It really helped in my case as my filon skirt is much cleaner now.

I haven't had that problem since we bought the new Dodge the exhaust pipe is as clean as a new one. Now I can imagine how it must look before the DPF filters.
