What year did Ford and Chevrolet do away with carburetors on motor homes and start using fuel injection? I am in the market for a MH but think I should buy one with fuel injection.

Ron, I am by no means an expert, however if the unit has a For V10 or a GM 8.1L engine it will be fuel injected. I am sure there will be other GM engines that are FI.

I had a 1989 Southwind on a Chev P30 Chassis. It had a carb. I believe that was the last year on the 454.

My neighbor has a 91 coach with the Ford 460 and it has port injection. The GM 454's used throttle body fuel injection, but not sure what year(s) either changed over from the carburetor system.

I'm sure as this thread progresses there are those who know for sure and can answer your question with accuracy.

Ron,

Look at 2000 and newer MH's with either the Ford V10 or the Chevy 8.1 engines. Not only will you be getting a good engine, but also a better chassis.

You have to be very careful specifying by year. Most chassis are older than the Motorhome model year. Depending on the brand, it can be as much as two years different, unless you are buying an off brand, then up to 4 years. If you just go by chassis year, GM went to TBI somewhere between '90 and '91. Chassis year '96 went to the Vortec motor which is port injected and significant bump in HP.

Of course you can convert anything. Mines an '83 with a '95 GM TBI computer adapted to port injection. TBI only benefits cold starts and altitude compensation. Technically a carb will atomize the fuel better than TBI and if set up correctly should out perform it. The big advantage with port injection is that it allows for a more versatile intake manifold design.

Ron,

I had a 86 Chevrolet with carboration and a 96 chev with throttle body injection. Both chassis were of the preceding year.

The 454 in MHs never used throttle body injection, went straight to port injection for the '90 model year and got OD transmission at the same time. Chevy small blocks used throttle body in the late '80s.

My was chassis was built in "89". The MH is considered a "90" it has a carb I believe it was the last year for GM to have a carb.

I know that's wrong, I have a 1990 P30, TBI with a turbo 475.

1989 was the transition year for the P30, some carbs, some TBI. OD trans was used starting in 1991.
