I have a 96 7.3 Powerstroke so take it for what it's worth. I hate Dodge. Rented 2 brand new ones(gas) and the truck was garbage. But you are talking about a Cummins. As a whole, though not every year, best diesel on the market. The way I look at it is it's a great engine wrappred in a peice of s***. It's still a Cummins. I sure wish I could by a Ford or Chevy with a Cummins in it, if that tells you anything. Good luck to you.

P.S. this is not to start a Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge thread. JMHO.

Good luck trying not to start a war with a post like that.

You have a very narrow minded view indeed. The place I used to work at had a fleet of primarily Ford trucks (cheapest bid, and we got what we paid for). Interior pieces falling off in your hand, dome lights that wouldn't turn off, driveshafts coming loose, airbag system problems, diesel engines giving us problems..... I could go on, but the list of problems was extensive. If I were to use your line of thinking, I would say the whole trucks were "garbage" even the engines!

But, I am an adult and I realize that not all trucks from any brand are garbage. Sure we had some bad luck with the Fords, but there are many happy Ford owners out there. And by the same token, there are many happy Dodge fans out there. You would be wise to remove your blinders and step into the real world.

Explain to me your defintion of narrow minded. I simply posted what I have been told by word of mouth and my expeirences. Your explanation of the Ford's interior was my problem with the two Dodges(brand new). I had a 94 Jeep that was great but Jeep had a bad repuation at that time. Did it mean they were all bad. NO.Did I ever say all Dodges were bad? If I did please point it out. You might have a difficult time but please do try. The other guy and you assumed that is what I meant. Once again, you know what they say about assuming. If they were all bad, Dodge wouldn't be in business. You got your feelings hurt because you are a Dodge owner and thats ok but maybe you sir should try and take the blinders off. When my Ford takes it's last breath I will more than likely be a Dodge owner because that is all I will be able to afford.

In closing, please tell me where I said they were are all garbage. Quote me if you must but do try. Thanks!

The way I look at it is it's a great engine wrappred in a peice of junk.

You didn't say "garbage" but you used a pretty similar synonym.

You can't expect to post that kind garbage reply and not ruffle feathers. Don't try and defend it, your bias is obvious. You hate Dodge. That's exactly what you said. Don't try and twist it now that you got called on it. Suck it up princess. If you don't want to get piled on, don't tell us our trucks are "pieces of junk.".

Yep...pretty obvious, YOU asked to have pointed out that you said all Dodge's were garbage...I think that's close enough, now you get all whiney because you got called on it??
Give me a break.
You asked for it, get over it.

Not being antagonistic here, I really want to know.

Those 2 statements in bold pretty much sum it up. You haven't "hurt my feelings" I am far more of an adult than that. I simply like to state opposing viewpoints and separate the fact from fiction. Again, your anti Dodge blinders are on a little too tight, perhaps cutting off circulation to your brain. You should loosen them up just a little.

By the way, if that 96 PSD is still treating you right, you should keep it around. Those are great trucks and get better fuel mileage than the diesel engines of today!

180,000 miles on my Dodge Cummins (and that's not very many if you really start asking around) - preventative maintenance and the typical consumables/wear items has all it's asked of me. I grew up in a family owned construction company of all Fords and only Fords. I drove Fords for many years before I bought my 97 Dodge Ram 2500 CTD and it's worked out just fine. Who knows, another 180k miles and I might feel differently, but we'll see.

I've owned a lot of trucks in my life. I never had much luck out of GM trucks. Some people swear by them. My Chevys were always problem-prone though. My Fords were all good trucks. Never owned a diesel Ford though. In 2005, I went looking for a diesel to pull a 5ver with. Checked out the Fords because I'd had good luck with my gasser Fords. Decided to do some research and found out that the 6.0 Powerstroke was extremely problematic compared to the Cummins or the Duramax. Talked to some diesel mechanics and they verified that. They rated Cummins as the best hands-down; Duramax, a distant second and the 6.0 Powerstroke a definite "DO NOT BUY." I followed their advice and bought a new '05 Dodge Cummins 2500. The truck has been flawless in the 3 years I've owned it. Zero problems with engine and zero problems with truck.
The 7.3 Powerstroke, though, was a much better engine. Problem is, they quit making it halfway through 2003. The new '08 Ford 6.4 Powerstroke is supposed to be much better but too soon to tell. There have been reports of some early problems with it though and the fuel mileage of the 6.4 is reported to be the worst of the bunch.
Some of the other posters have already mentioned it but I found out some of the same things when I was doing my research back in '05. The Cummins is the only one of the three that is a true medium-duty truck engine. The same engine that's in the Dodge 2500/3500 is found in much larger commercial trucks such as Ford's own 650/750 series! Also found in motor homes, school buses, delivery trucks, etc.
There are fewer parts to the I-6 Cummins and the parts are much heftier. It doesn't matter what the reason for the heftier parts are (same displacement; fewer cylinders); the fact is that they ARE heftier, beefier parts.
The Cummins is easier to work on if you ever need to have it serviced because there's much more room in the engine bay to get to things. One of the diesel magazines recently checked prices at several diesel repair shops for the same maintenance on the 3 different engines (Cummins, Duramax, Powerstroke). They found that the same maintenance was much cheaper to do on the Cummins than on the others.
These are some of the reasons that I went with the Dodge in '05 and I've been extremely happy with the truck.

The ideal truck!

Ford body, Cummins engine, Allison Transmission... There is a guy in Missouri doing these conversions if your wallet can handle it.

Yesterday I saw a new Freightliner FL series with the cummins/allison package and a "Dixie" Customs interior conversion. NICE!!!!! I asked the owner how much he saidn he preferred not to answer because his wife would shoot him on the spot. LOL
