2008 GM 3500 dually with 6.0 gas, automatic. Anyone towing with this setup? If so, then what and how much do you tow? Hills, mountains flat ground? Mileage? What's the max. fifth wheel tow capacity? 10500#? I know the D-Max/Allison is about 8K more and it's rated at 16500#, I tow with a 8.1/Allison now and was wondering if anyone had given the 6.0 gasser with the six speed Hydramatic a try. I'm not trolling or fishing!! Just wondering, cause I never hear or read about anyone with this setup....... And I'm wanting a new truck!!

I don't know, I used to love my 6.0L until I started towing heavy weight with it

I have to agree with the above, unless they've done a lot with that motor, I'd say you'd run out of engine long before you'd run out of truck. I don't understand why you'd put a 6.0L in a 3500, it sort of defeats the purpose of a beefier truck, doesn't it? - Dave

The 8.1 is a torque motor. The 6.0 is a rev motor. 2 different animals. If you do a lot of hilly driving pulling a trailer, then no doubt, get the diesel. If you only pull once in a while, and mostly flat areas, get the gasser.

If you like smoother less revving, less shifting, get the diesel.
The 6.0 will do what you ask, but it will let you know it's doing it.
The duramax, on the other hand will do it pretty much flawlessly.
Mileage is a bit better with the diesel, but you're paying for it off the start. (and don't tell me resale is better. Of course it is, you paid for it when you bought it)

I had the '03 duramax when we pulled our trailer, it was smooth up and down. That engine did everything I asked it to do.
I know have an '08 reg cab 4x4 gasser. I use it to plow and pull things around. We have a motorhome now, so I got rid of the diesel, and the price was right on the 3500 gasser.

I pull my car trailer and have pulled up to 10,000lbs. It WILL pull it. The 6L90 is a nice transmission. But, there is a difference because of the torque. The 6.0 seems to want to rev up (which is typical for a gas motor) and constantly shift. Once you get used to the shift pattern, you can use the manual button and use it to your advantage.

So if you ask if I were to buy a duallie, (not a reg cab, which I have now) which engine I would get, I'd answer the diesel, hands down.
You'll really be happier with it. JMO

I had the 7.4 454 for many years and it worked great for most applicatins but once I got into the 10k and up trailers it didn't perform very well and labored hard.Bought a Duramax 3500 08 and haven't looked back since, the truck is a pure workhorse! If I wasnt pulling heavy say 7k and under I would of kept the 454 Dually.

Have you read the 2007 HD Shootout? The GM 6.0L gas engine and 6 speed auto did very well stacked up against the gas engines offered by it's competitors. Especially when you consider the Ford V10 powered truck had a 4.30 rear, and the GM 6.0L had a 3.73 rear.

Ditto.

The 5th wheel tow rating for a 2008 3500HD 6.0L/4.10 ranges from 11,600lbs for a CC/4x4, up to 12,600lbs for a RC/2WD.

And 14,600~16,500 for the DMax.

Payload. If you want a truck to carry the load and not pull it the gas motor is what you want. That D/A combo weight a ton
